Just when you think it can't get worse for Trump...

Meh, asking and threatening coersion are two different things. I've already decided to ignore this one and see what develops in a week to see if there's also proof of coersion. It's not a stretch to say there is but we're not getting anywhere by dealing in opinions.

Maybe, maybe not.

Keep in mind, for someone in a high position (like, say, the President of the United States), simply "asking" can include a whole lot of coercive pressure.

And of course, how it was 'asked' can range from a simple inquiry, to full blown obstruction of justice.

Given Trump's past, I tend to lean more towards the "obstruction" end of the spectrum.

He has a long, long history of 'making it go away' when confronted with investigations into his illegal behaviors.

Don't forget that Trump cut his teeth under the mentorship of Roy Cohn, an expert in blatantly committing illegal actions and then getting away with it, something we know to be second nature to Trump.

A great approach.

So far the administration (and Trump supporters) are trying to spin this three ways:

James Comer - Trump was just joking. "It looks different on paper."

Several Republican congressmen - it's silly to take Trump seriously despite what he says. "Trump was just spouting off, it wasn't a serious attempt at obstruction."

White House official - people just don't understand Trump's special language. "POTUS wasn't telling Comey to end Flynn investigation; this is just the way he speaks."

I have a feeling this is a "throw it against the wall and see what sticks" approach.

I think the most interesting part of this is that Trump himself hasn't tweeted about it yet.

And in other news Morgan Lewis & Bockius is looking forward to record earnings in the next few years.

It's Ok if you didn't get it, that's the law firm that Trump has on retainer.

I think you are very right.

Talking openly about it makes claiming executive privilege harder. That is going to limit a potential defence.

I have a feeling, and really nothing to substantiate it, that Comey has significantly more damning information and this leak was an effort to bait congress into subpoenaing that information.
