yoink 321 #201 June 22, 2017 The big problem is that career politicians would rather been seen to be passing laws than doing nothing, even if those laws SUCK or are poorly thought out. Don't be surprised if this gets passed by the Senate simply because they've been stating that they'll repeal Obamacare. They'll then tout it as 'mission successful' to their faithful. Once it's passed, every bad thing that happens in healthcare (and from all indications, there will be a lot of very bad things that happen) will be owned by the GOP. billvon 3,085 #207 June 26, 2017 Quick summary: 14 million more uninsured by 2018 24 million more uninsured by 2024 21 year old healthy people will pay slightly less. 40 year old healthy people will pay a little more. Older people will pay a lot more. A 64-year-old making $26,500 a year that pays $1700 now would be paying $14600 under the new law. People ages 50 to 64 who are below 200 percent of the poverty level would go from 12% to 30% uninsured. It will cost more for the first two years, then cost less as time goes on. Best case is that it cuts the deficit by about 5%. ($587 to $544 billion.)
billvon 3,085 #208 June 27, 2017 Oh, about all those savings from that plan? A neophyte student of economics might think "hey, we can reduce the deficit a bit!" But of course that's not the plan. Those savings in the plan? Much of it is going right back into political pork. ===================== Republicans eye billions in side deals to win Obamacare repeal votes The White House and Senate GOP leaders have nearly $200 billion in savings to divvy up among senators’ priorities to secure votes for the imperiled bill. By Josh Dawsey and Burgess Everett POLITICO 06/26/2017 White House and Capitol Hill officials are exploring potential deals to divvy up billions of dollars to individual senators’ priorities in a wide-ranging bid to secure votes for the imperiled GOP health care bill. A Congressional Budget Office score that projected 22 million fewer Americans would have insurance under the plan sent some members fleeing Monday and left the bill in jeopardy of failing to have enough votes to even be called to the Senate floor this week. But Republicans in the White House and in Congress were pleasantly surprised that the bill included more savings than they expected — and are trying to figure out if they can dole it out for votes. ====================== So less health care for Americans and more pork for Republican senators! billvon 3,085 #210 June 27, 2017 New study shows that change to Trumpcare will result in 26,800 additional deaths a year. ========================================== Health Care Cuts Will Increase Odds Of Dying For The Uninsured, Medical Review Predicts For every 1 million people who lose health insurance, about 1,300 people nationwide could die early, according to an Annals of Internal Medicine review. Dan Vergano BuzzFeed News Reporter Posted on June 26, 2017, at 2:01 p.m. About 28,600 more people could die every year in the US if a proposed Senate health care bill becomes law, suggests a review of medical studies released on Monday. “Being uninsured can be lethal,” review author Steffie Woolhandler of City University of New York told BuzzFeed News. . . . In reality, people without health insurance face odds ranging from 3% to 29% higher of dying prematurely compared to someone who has health insurance, concludes the Annals of Internal Medicine review. Taking the midpoint of those odds as a benchmark, Woolhandler suggested that about 1,300 people a year die prematurely every year in the US for every 1 million people who lose health insurance. Obamacare, which added about 20 million people to the ranks of the insured, likely preserved lives at that same rate, she said. “This review is sensible and, I think, comes to the right conclusion: health insurance reduces mortality,” health economist Andrew Goodman-Bacon of Vanderbilt University told BuzzFeed News by email. But he cautioned against drawing exact numbers from mortality estimates, because different states will changes rules for access to Medicaid in different ways, and premium increases will similarly vary. “Research on this finds that poorer people — who face more risk factors and use different amounts and types of medical care — seem to benefit the most [from gaining health insurance],” he added. In the review, Woolhandler and her colleague David Himmelstein of Harvard Medical School combined 51 studies on the health effects of losing health insurance conducted since 2002, the year a landmark Institute of Medicine report found about 18,000 excess deaths a year due to people lacking health insurance, largely among cancer patients. ============================= https://www.buzzfeed.com/danvergano/senate-healthcare-bill-might-mean-28600-more-deaths-a-year?bftwnews&utm_term=.mpmOEZl214#.sk35Gv6BWQ

It's very hard to face voters after making health insurance for sick people either very expensive or out of the question. And Senators represent States. While Trump claimed he was going to change how Washington was run, there are still some very entrenched institutions. One of them is AARP. They have a lot of clout, because they have a lot of members who vote. Get them mad and whoever opposes them may well not be in office after the next election. Somewhat similar to the NRA. And the AARP does not like the AHA. Edit for typo and format error."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." billvon 3,085 #220 July 10, 2017 Well, now the senate bill is up to 10 no votes from republicans (they can only afford 2.) Looks like letting senators talk to their constituents over the 4th weekend was a big mistake for McConnell - he had hoped to ram it through before Americans knew what was being voted on. But he failed, and Republicans got a chance to hear from their constituents. So now 10 have backed out. And this is perhaps the kiss of death - a tweet from Trump.
