Challenger: Rep Tammy Duckworth (D)
Shot down in Iraq and lost both legs. Father is Marine Corp vet who traces ancestry back to Revolutionary War. Mother of Thai/Chinese ancestry.

During debate:

“You know, my family has served this nation in uniform going back to the Revolution. I’m a Daughter of the American Revolution. I’ve bled for this nation. But I still want to be there in the Senate when the drums of war sound, because people are quick to sound the drums of war, and I want to be there to say, ‘This is what it costs. This is what you’re asking us to do. And if that’s the case, I’ll go.' Families like mine are the ones that bleed first.”

Kirk:
"I forgot that your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington."

That is just fabulous. Illinois is a funny state. It's two very separate populations. The urban is very urban and the rural is very rural. Ted Nugent has a training camp for kids there. And Chicago is murder city. Kirk said what he said knowing full well who her father is. Stuff like that is as low as you can go openly. Right up to the line, but in the year of Trump not quite over it.

Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

I assume that in addition to Rep Duckworth's service and that of her family, it is probably a naturally Democratic seat. It is Barack Obama's old seat and Obama was probably given the chance to make the keynote address at the 2004 DNC--his first introduction to the national stage--in part because he was seen as a shoo-in. Dems lost the seat for awhile--and only very narrowly--only because of the corruption involved when Blago went to prison for trying to (or perhaps actually succeeding in) selling the seat to the highest bidder.

It was also astounding how often and how much this guy had embellished his military record. It takes a lot of hutzfa to run for the senate against a true war hero, after blatantly lying about your own service to the country.
