Trump's position on X

Recommended Posts

(and X really doesn't matter.)

Yesterday he hit a new record, I think - three position changes in one statement.

O'Reilly: But there has to be a [federal] minimum wage.
Trump: There doesn't have to be . . .
(OK! So he doesn't think there should be a federal minimum wage.)
Trump: I would leave it and raise it somewhat . . . I would say $10.
(Or maybe not. So he would keep it and increase it.)
Trump: The thing is, Bill, let the states make the deal.
(And he's back to no federal minimum wage.)

Perhaps this ties that record:

Trump: I don't want to have guns in classrooms although in some cases teachers should have guns in classrooms, frankly, because teachers are, you know, things that are going on in our schools are unbelievable, you look at some of our schools, unbelievable what's going on - but I'm not advocating guns in classrooms, but remember, in some cases, and a lot of people have made this case, teachers should be able to have guns, trained teachers should be able to have guns in classrooms.

Those were notable just because all those self-contradictions were in one statement. Over time of course there are a lot more:

“I have no intention of running for president.”
“I am officially running for president.”
“I don’t want it for myself. I don’t need it for myself.”
“I wanted to do this for myself. … I had to do it for myself.”

“Politicians are all talk and no action.”
“I’m not a politician.”
“I’m no different than a politician running for office.”

“I’m totally pro-choice.”
“I’m pro-life.”
“Look, I’m very pro-choice. I hate the concept of abortion. I hate it."
“I am very, very proud to say that I’m pro-life.”

“Don’t think you’re so smart that you can go it alone.”
“You must plan and execute your plan alone.”

“I surround myself with good people, and then I give myself the luxury of trusting them.”
“My motto is ‘Hire the best people, and don’t trust them.’”

“Surround yourself with people you can trust.”
“People are too trusting. I’m a very untrusting guy.”

“Expect the best from people.”
“If you have smart people working for you, they’ll try to screw you if they think they can do better without you.”
“You know, I know the smart people. I really know the smart people. I deal with the smart people.”

“I see no value whatsoever in believing ignorance to be an attribute.”
“I love the poorly educated.”

“Small talk can be one of the best ways to educate yourself.”
“I can’t stand small talk.”

“Stay as close to home as possible. Travel is time-consuming and, in my opinion, boring."
“There’s no excuse for staying home; the world’s too fantastic to miss out on it. I wish I could travel more.”

“Well, I read a lot … and over my life, I’ve read so much.”
“I don’t read much. Mostly I read contracts, but usually my lawyers do most of the work. There are too many pages.”

“I don’t want to be provocative, and in many cases I try not to be provocative.”
“I do love provoking people. There is truth to that.”
====================

All the above may be part of his appeal; he really can be all things to all people. Are you anti-abortion? You can find a quote that shows he supports your beliefs. Do you want a braggart or a humble guy for president? He's both; he said so! Do you think that Russia should be our ally? There are all his business dealings and pro-Putin rhetoric. Do you hate Russia? Here's a quote that shows Trump does, too.

I heard the term zeitgeist on the radio this morning. I haven't heard it used in a sentence since I was in grad school.

To adequately understand the current presidential campaign you have to be thoroughly conversant with the term.

Feelings, that is emotion, will govern the casting of ballots. Political analysis and facts cannot be trusted regardless if the source is Democrat or Republican.

You should listen to NPR more often then. I believe it was Obama being quoted in one of their stories that you heard.

Interestingly the GOP seems to recognize this as well:

Marco Rubio: Trump Will Learn On The Job
posted on Jul. 27, 2016, at 10:17 a.m.

"I also think there’s something to be said for, once you’re actually in that position, once you’re actually working at this thing, and you’re in there, and you start to have access to information that perhaps you didn’t have before, especially for someone that’s never been in politics, I think it starts to impact your views a little bit. And that’s my sense of it, as he settles into this role as the nominee and ultimately the president, access to these issues is going to begin to, in some ways, kind of shape some of the policy positions given reality versus perhaps what you might read about on a blog somewhere.”

Rubio added that it’s an “open question” whether Trump will ultimately become more informed on the issues . . .

So if he becomes president, he will begin to, in some ways, kind of shape some of his policy positions. Maybe. It's sort of an open question, whether he will become more informed on the issues or not. Elect him and find out!

So what Rubio is saying, in a roundabout way, is that he feels the policy positions Trump is campaigning on (the few things he has taken a recognisable position on, anyway) are based on things he might have read about on a blog somewhere?
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

That does not affect my post or belief.

Obama's handling of Guantanamo Bay is what Rubio is talking about. It was easy to make campaign sound bites about closing this monstrosity, but actually doing it is a lot harder when you dig into the details. He still makes proclamations every year or so about doing it, but it's been 8 years!

I know. Your beliefs are what you choose to believe. Like everyone else. I only remarked because I hear that word frequently. Usually on NPR from commentators.
