normiss 897 #2 July 15, 2016 Given the military presence and the type of weaponry the US has there, this could be a very interesting situation.

Phil1111 1,183 #4 July 16, 2016 By the looks of it it was a completely successful coup. "Thousands of judges purged The Turkish government has embarked on a purge of the judiciary following the botched coup, state TV reports, in the first sign of how last night could increase Erdogan's authoritarian rule. NTV said 2,745 judges had been removed from duty, following a decision of the High Council of Judges. Five members of the High Judiciary Court Board were also removed. " http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/16/turkey-coup-president-erdogan-says-military-elements-guilty-of-t/ Turkey had coups in 1960, 1971 and 1980, and a near-coup in 1997. Turkey wants to join the EU. Erdogan will continue to consolidate power, replace secularism with fascism and set aside the ideas of Ataturk.

muff528 3 #6 July 16, 2016 Phil1111 By the looks of it it was a completely successful coup...... Interesting take on it! The attempted coup and the resultant populist rejection allowed Erdogan to successfully stage a sort of "coup" on his own government (where his authority was somewhat limited), by seizing and consolidating even more authoritarian power. And he did it while on vacay! But here's what is really interesting -- In the past, a deposed leader would either be killed or go into hiding or exile not knowing if he really has enough support, whether from government or from the populace, to regain power. In those cases, the coup might well have been successful. Here, he tapped into social media and, within hours, was able to mobilize his supporters to actively repel the coup and see their successes in real time. He was then able to make his triumphant return to Istanbul. All in one day.
