This is low even for the GOP

Recommended Posts

National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) put out this image earlier today in its attempt to drag down Tammy Duckworth.

Duckworth lost both her legs serving in Iraq, and subsequently served in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

I hope they fire the insensitive moron who created it.

I was willing to allow that it was an innocent - though monumentally stupid - oversight... Right up until the spokesperson went on the offensive rather than admitting it was in incredibly poor taste (intentional or not).
You are playing chicken with a planet - you can't dodge and planets don't blink. Act accordingly.

meh.

Storm in a teacup.

Not even a junior staffer would be stupid enough to make a joke about an amputee on social media. It's just poorly phrased.

Duckworths campaign could have laughed it off or used it to attract the medias attention to more important messages, but that becoming a focus is ridiculous.

To actually seek someone to lose their job over it is equally reprehensible, imo.

Nonsense. That "poorly phrased" message is all over the social media and print media. It makes the NRSC look insensitive and stupid. People have lost jobs in politics for far less.

Just because it's happened in the past doesn't mean it's right to do so again.

Have you never said anything stupid or poorly phrased, professor? Should you have been instantly fired for it?

By all means, point out that the message is insensitive and stupid, but then move on to more important stuff. Spending time fighting over this rather than on substantive issues doesn't benefit anyone, least of all the public.

We have three instances (that I know of) in this campaign of Republicans mocking the handicapped. I think that is significant. YMMV.

It's how you choose to see it, isn't it?

If this was simply an oversight, then it can't be used as ammo against the Republicans, therefore you choose to see it as a deliberate attack.

I'll say it again. I think the NRSC response lacked any class, but I don't believe there was any intent in the original message to mock the handicapped. (In this case)

Remember - we're only seeing part of the email response. It may well have gone like this:

"The NRSC would like to apologize to Ms. Duckworth for the poorly phrased tweet sent out this morning. There was never any intent to draw attention to her handicap and we believe this battle should be fought based upon public policies [and]
it would be great if reporters would pay as much attention to a deleted tweet as they should to Tammy Duckworth being sued by VA whistleblowers for ignoring claims of mistreatment and corruption."

See how the message changes?

Equally, I think calling for the instant firing of the person who spoke thoughtlessly shows a lack of class.

Agreed. Some clueless staffer didn't think before posting; he/she just screwed up.

However, after it was posted, not even the most brain-dead political hack could think it was really OK - and there is no way this wasn't immediately elevated given how offensive it was. So someone fairly high up made a deliberate decision to not apologize for the screwup.

Apologizing is for the weak. When you are never wrong, there is never a need to apologize.

Ask anybody. Being wrong and compromise is for pussies. No true patriotic American would do either.
