Goodbye First Amendment

Recommended Posts

I know many people here may be thinking that will never happen, but I hate to say it, the foundation has already been laid. Exhibit A: Yale students
http://www.mediaite.com/online/yale-students-sign-petition-to-end-first-amendment/

Some of you might be saying that he tricked the students by the way he phrased the question. But come on, it’s the First Amendment! Who doesn’t know what it is?

And this is Yale! That is the part that should really scare people. This isn’t a small backwoods institution; it’s a premiere Ivy League college. 6 Supreme Court Justices have come from Yale. You know, where people will come from that will shape out future?

Also consider the pew research study that said 40% of millennials are OK with limiting speech:
http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/11/20/40-of-millennials-ok-with-limiting-speech-offensive-to-minorities/

So in short, to speak in public, you will need a license to show that you have been trained in proper, non-offensive speech. We are not trampling on your right to free speech; we are regulating it for your safety. You can still speak, after you have gone through the appropriate classes and paid the appropriate fees to the government.

Do you have a license for that freedom?

Google:

Rick Mercer Talking to Americans.

If you agree that the contents of that indicate Americans are inherently stupid, I will agree that Exhibit A does indeed cause a severe risk to your 1st Amendment.

That was good for a laugh. It does not, however, change the fact that these are Yale students, and are not supposed to be stupid, and that I suspect that there is a higher demand for limited speech on most college campuses than there is in everyday America.

Remember, this is the 'entitlement generation.' Someone won the soccer game, someone lost the game, but everyone still got a trophy.

The flip side to that coin is that maybe society is changing and the young folks who make up the future are part of that change.

Stuff can't stay the same forever.

Just because something always been a certain way doesn't mean it's the best way for the current time.

Freedom of speech and the first amendment needs to be protected though. The free exchange of ideas is THE corner stone of any free society.

Right now the leading theory on this eroding right IS the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality. Everyone is so special they can't be offended.

And opposing view points are offensive. Hence the extreme liberal fascism we are seeing today.

I think you are spot on with that one.

These are the people that will be running things in twenty years.

I have seen the future and it is WTF.

Yeah, kids today.

Quote

"The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for
authority, they show disrespect to their elders.... They no longer
rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents,
chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their
legs, and are tyrants over their teachers."

You know who that's commonly attributed to*, right?

I've seen a few of "today's youth."
Some are pretty hopeless.
Some are average.
Some are outstanding.

I work with a class of HS seniors a few times per year (different group each term, 2 days per group).
Last time one of the kids accidentally knocked over my coffe mug and broke the handle off. I told him that it was not a big deal, it was an old cheapo travel mug that I was using specifically because I didn't mind much if it was damaged. And besides, it was just the handle. I knew I could just glue the handle back on (and I did).

However, he still went out and got me a new one (not a super nice one, but a decent gas station one) because he felt responsible. I told him "that wasn't necessary, but thank you." The teacher had told him the same thing. The teacher and I agreed that "the youth of today" aren't all bad. :)
* Quote is attributed to Socrates. Probably isn't, maybe Plato or maybe back to Sumerian or Babylonian times. In any case, it isn't new by any measure.

Cynical me thinks that a trophy company came up with the whole concept just to increase sales.

No kidding. Some guy claims to have won a medal and if it isn't true he has to go to jail, cause those who did win a medal get all offended and butt hurt. Bunch of pussies.

Just let people live there life.

Have you ever earned something that means a lot to you?

Or were you just being facetious?
