gowlerk 2,260 #51 November 30, 2015 Olsteen makes his money from book sales and speaking fees. He owns both his present $10.5 million home and his previous $2.9 million. (apparently the high end real estate market in Houston is still soft. So it's not a good time to sell.) He has not drawn a salary from his church for more than 10 years.Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free. Coreeece 2 #53 November 30, 2015 You're preaching to the choir... Normiss said that the house was tax free, so I'm wondering where the $200,000+ in property taxes per year is at?Never was there an answer....not without listening, without seeing - Gilmour

rushmc 23 #55 November 30, 2015 normiss Everything I've read says "owned by the church". Feel free to prove me wrong. gowlerk 2,260 #56 November 30, 2015 Just a guess, but I would imagine that the trust is probably held by the Olsteens. Please don't get the idea that I'm a fan of them. Quit the opposite. I'm sure the trust is about some kind of tax avoidance. But that's different from being church property.Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Coreeece 2 #62 November 30, 2015 gowlerk Please don't get the idea that I'm a fan of them. Me neither, but probably for different reasons. Personally, I'm just not a big fan of the "prosperity gospel" gowlerk I'm sure the trust is about some kind of tax avoidance. But that's different from being church property. I'm sure the trust provides benefits that exceed anything a homestead credit would offer, but that's a far cry from "tax free."Never was there an answer....not without listening, without seeing - Gilmour
normiss 871 #63 November 30, 2015 After a light search, it's confusing, but it is clearly not church owned as I had read before on the Internets. Yet clearly free to him, and most certainly tax free to him. Yup, I was incorrect on the tax free bit.

wmw999 2,559 #66 November 30, 2015 The article I read indicated that the trust is to avoid federal taxes, and that the Osteens pay the property tax. Of course, since it's their church, if the trust pays something, the money comes from what they would have paid, I imagine. I was first exposed to prosperity theology in college in the 1970's; a wonderful sociology of religion class. It seemed weird then, and still does. I'm not sure if I'm following that part correctly. Can you please clarify? One of the shareholders of the trust company is the Covenant Church in Chicago. Nothing I've read suggests that Lakewood (their church) has anything to do with it.Never was there an answer....not without listening, without seeing - Gilmour
