Progress and setbacks in the War on Terror

Olsteen makes his money from book sales and speaking fees. He owns both his present $10.5 million home and his previous $2.9 million. (apparently the high end real estate market in Houston is still soft. So it's not a good time to sell.) He has not drawn a salary from his church for more than 10 years.

He doesn't own them.

An outfit called "Covenant Trust" holds the deeds. I'm not exactly sure what that all means from a tax/tax exempt point of view.

Does that mean that the trust company allows Osteen to live there for free? Is there not $200,000 in property taxes due every year?

Everything I've read says "owned by the church".
Feel free to prove me wrong.

Just a guess, but I would imagine that the trust is probably held by the Olsteens. Please don't get the idea that I'm a fan of them. Quit the opposite. I'm sure the trust is about some kind of tax avoidance. But that's different from being church property.

Coming from the puppet twins who are our troll masters, I'll take it as a compliment.

Me neither, but probably for different reasons. Personally, I'm just not a big fan of the "prosperity gospel"

I'm sure the trust provides benefits that exceed anything a homestead credit would offer, but that's a far cry from "tax free."

After a light search, it's confusing, but it is clearly not church owned as I had read before on the Internets. Yet clearly free to him, and most certainly tax free to him.
:)

Then it shouldn't be so hard for you to provide at least one link to a source that states it so "clearly and most certainly."

The article I read indicated that the trust is to avoid federal taxes, and that the Osteens pay the property tax.

Of course, since it's their church, if the trust pays something, the money comes from what they would have paid, I imagine.

I was first exposed to prosperity theology in college in the 1970's; a wonderful sociology of religion class. It seemed weird then, and still does.

I'm not sure if I'm following that part correctly. Can you please clarify?

One of the shareholders of the trust company is the Covenant Church in Chicago. Nothing I've read suggests that Lakewood (their church) has anything to do with it.
