Actually Obama was indicating that there were 58 contiguous states, and 60 in total. Which would quite obviously make it a mistatement (saying 58 instead of 48) unless he continued to insist there were 60 states and got pissy at any journalists who questioned him on it.

I had not heard this specifically but, this deduction is commonly a point in a flat tax plan which I have heard he supports

True dat. "Incompetence" over-describes many mistakes. Mainly because it's a fairly powerful term, without a lot of shading.

Just this morning I poured some cat food into the water bowl instead of the food bowl. It was an incompetent action, but the term describes the action, and me at that moment. Yesterday I reconfigured a closet (added shelves and moved the rod) including a custom-engineered rod holder. That over-describes the fact that one side of the rod couldn't be attached using any hardware I could find, so I made something out of strapping and some nuts and bolts.
Which is the better descriptor? Incompetent cat-food pourer or innovative closet designer ? I guess it depends on whether you're a liberal or a conservative poopyhead
