Please note however that I strongly support and even encourage the public expression of faith at some point in a believer's life.Never was there an answer....not without listening, without seeing - Gilmour
Coreeece 2 #27 September 9, 2015 piisfish***Math, language, music and physics aren't affected by subjective bias in the same way religion can be...take for example teachings by a homosexual liberal atheist, or a hardcore fundamentalist christian prepper... Religion is best left at home and at church, or in a personal atmosphere.what about history then ? I see your point, but I still don't think it would be as susceptible to biased manipulation as religion can be. Besides, I don't think any of us would ever agree to remove history from the curriculum - It's bad enough as it is - some kids don't even know who Hitler was. How are they ever supposed to learn the art of a good Godwin?Never was there an answer....not without listening, without seeing - Gilmour

Washing your hands helps keep E Coli out of the food chain. Sex is fun, but Gonorrhea, Syphilis, HIV and babies are known to result if you're not careful. Playing make-believe is entertaining, but the human mind is susceptible to all kinds of malware that prey upon this pastime. It is easily demonstrated that any conglomeration of nonsense that meets a few key programming standards can garner a following of True Believers (tm). Witness Mormon and Scientology. A study of the origins of various popular systems of belief reveal the social underpinnings they have in common. It is more useful to use religions that are out of favor as examples, since it is a given that a significant part of the class, to include the teacher, is likely to adhere to some system of belief. True skeptics are rare indeed. I think Islam should be discussed in class precisely as National Socialism should be reviewed. One may ignore something that evil at their own peril. BSBD, Winsor Speaking of Islam, I saw this video today. Lovely what's happening there in London with those salafists exercising their freedom of speech. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
TriGirl 343 #31 September 10, 2015 jakee*** Where are those people now, since classes had to not only write down, but had to memorize a prayer, in school, and as part of the curriculum? Did they? Nope. Had to be able to identify the five pillars of Islam. They are the most basic tenants of the religion, and therefore the key to having even the most BASIC comprehension of what it's about and where its followers might be coming from. I agree with the choices of religions that school incorporated. They are the ones the students are least likely to have an exposure to (e.g. to be able to understand in the grand scheme of things), yet are otherwise quite likely to come into contact with as they continue life. Judaism, Christianity... the students have plenty of opportunities not only at home and in their communities, but just in modern American life and traditions, to get all the information they want about those. In our modern world, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism are much more subject to conjecture and rumor, with little opportunities for young Americans to be able to get some exposure/context. Let them go out and ask for themselves? Since when do we let kids decide what the society feels is important to know/learn? I am an atheist, but I'm surrounded by people who practice some form of religion. It's nice to understand their line of thinking as it pertains to their religious influences. How is this a bad thing in a globalized, free society? As someone who has studied world cultures and works in international relations, I wish more American kids would come out of school having even a basic understanding of people outside their bubbles of influence.See the upside, and always wear your parachute! -- Christopher Titus Shut Up & Jump! I'll bring up the basis of Christianity and it's like a foreign subject here...but I understand. I was an alter server for 8 years in the catholic church and still didn't understand who the fuck Jesus was and why he died until my buddy explained it to me at the bar when I was like 22 years old and drunk enough to listen...wtf, right?Never was there an answer....not without listening, without seeing - Gilmour
