*********I've never quite understood why Muricans get all bent out of shape over a flag.

As demonstrated time and again, people confuse the thing, with the thing it stands for.

A symbol is simply that, nothing more, nothing less. It is NOT the country.

I understand the youthful indoctrination and brainwashing some people go through which confuses them on the matter, but they are confused none the less.

For the same reason people get all pissed off about seeing a confederate flag. It is what it represents.

Imagine you were Jewish and there was a Nazi flag flying over a state capitol building.

So, yeah, I understand why some people get upset about a confederate flag flying over a government building, since the government probably shouldn't be flying symbols of oppression.

That said, individuals who choose to, while I personally find repugnant, it's their flag. If they want people to know they're assholes; who am I to say they can't?

The American flag was displayed in post-Reconstruction government offices and courtrooms which perpetuated and/or enabled the perpetuation of some of the worst horrors of post-Civil War racial discrimination and oppression. It was also the standard borne by, for example, US Army cavalry units that massacred Native American non-combatants. I was raised in the post-WWII 20th Century by a veteran who taught me to revere the flag. But to many, the Stars and Stripes, and not just the Confederate flag, has been a symbol of oppression. Just a little perspective.

Note also American tradition is that we dip our flag to nobody. Just the way we are.

Arrogant!

Hell yes. It is arrogance. A part of American ethos. For some insight I'd recommend reading Holidays in Hell by PJ O'Rourke. Chapter "Among the Euroweenies." the end of it, that starts with "a John Wayne movie."

That book was the inspiration for some of my travels in the ME.

The result: they bitch about the problem (usually more or less correctly), but they don't yet know how to come up with the answer, so those older than them tend to dismiss them. Then they get revenge by poisoning our food.

Nicely put.

Sadly - fewer and fewer people evolve past this stage. Thus we get a lot of loud mouth complainers with no ability to debate in a kind way. and even fewer with recommendations of solutions that isn't stock prattle.

I have no idea how to fix this....but I'm very upset.... :P

At Elsinore last week I watched the British Army Red Devils parachute team practicing. On a flag jump the Union Flag dropped on the ground (which is desert dirt in Elsinore). No-one got all upset about it, in fact didn't even attempt to catch it. Had it been a stars and stripes there would have been endless griping.

No-one gets all bent out of shape if the Union Flag or its image is put on bras, panties, bikinis, TP, put on the ground, or burned.

I've never quite understood why Muricans get all bent out of shape over a flag.

total nonsense - those that get bent about it are the exception, not the rule

we've done tons of flag demos - as long as there is an attempt at a minimum to catch the flag, no one minds at all if the catch isn't perfect or if the flag is on the ground, astroturf, ball field or whatever for a few moments.

people in general are a bit more normal than you paint them

You're doing a 'kids these days" kinda thing.

I don't think so. I think ease of life, the internet, etc make it a natural transition. Quick fix, bumper sticker politics, emotional rather than rational opinions, etc etc etc - look around.

Evidenced by most of the posting here as well.

now get off my lawn

And on the other side, "Michelle Manhart has caused controversy before by posting in Playboy magazine. But in this case, she is absolutely right to defend the American flag at all costs. The police should be helping her protect the flag, instead of arresting her."

Bullshit.

The flag in question was someone else's private property. They can do with it as they see fit.

Sure I do. And I stand up and hold my hat over my heart when they play the National Anthem at ball games.

I do those things as a sign of respect for what the flag represents, and because it is tradition.

What does that have to do with anything?

Exactly my point, I believe the flag should be respected for what it stands for and the blood shed for it. Placing it on the ground and walking on it is disrespectful.

When I used to do demos, we always tried hard to catch the flag before it touched the ground. When we repacked the flag we would hide away because we had to fold it on the ground and we did not want any spectators to witness the procedure.

Patriotic Americans do not want to see the flag disrepected in any form.

So tucking it between your tits, your ass cheeks, and standing on it while it drags the floor ARE cool with you.

If she is Hot, then yes.

I look at it this way. If I would be excited to trade paces with the flag then it's all good.

Sure it should be treated with respect, but that doesn't make it a crime to do otherwise. The protesters, no matter how stupid, had every right to disrespect the flag. Not agreeing with their actions doesn't make their actions illegal.

Stealing their flag is illegal. The wannabe media whore should have been arrested and charged. Of course, that would have made her an even bigger cause celeb for the moron class, so it's probably best she wasn't.

The protesters, on the other hand, did nothing illegal. They shouldn't be subjected to legal action. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be subjected to counter-protest or attempts to educate them.

So it seems many of us here do in fact support "desecration" of the American flag so long as it is desecrated in a fashion that we agree with.

So the protesters stomping on it are fine too.

I wonder if more importanter stuff is happening.

I could not see the "ass cheeks" reference you spoke of above. But hot babes and the American flag are definitely cool.

Sociology 101: Mores, folkways, customs and traditions determine cultural relativity. IMO, cultural relativity carries more immediate weight than any law.
