yoink 321 #1 April 17, 2015 http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-32330382 My favourite bit of the piece is the statement "It will enable the navy to carry out what it calls "precision low-collateral damage strikes" while the video shows a graphical representation of 3 buildings being repeatedly pummeled by a multitude of these swarming drones... Driver1 0 #2 April 17, 2015 Low collateral damage means that structures not being targeted don't suffer much damage from strikes to nearby targets. So I'm going to guess these drones will be using munitions designed for that. There will be no addressing the customers as "Bitches", "Morons" or "Retards"! yoink 321 #3 April 17, 2015 What about people nearby intended targets? Do they count as collateral? I suspect the more explosives being thrown around, the greater the potential for one of them to miss its target... I think the technology is cool. I just think the video of swarm attacking a building is terrifying.
Driver1 0 #4 April 17, 2015 It's a valid question. We just don't know until we actually see real footage of the drones striking a target. There will be no addressing the customers as "Bitches", "Morons" or "Retards"!
DanG 1 #5 April 17, 2015 In the realm of naval gunfire, hitting a single building is precision. - Dan G
dthames 0 #6 April 17, 2015 There seems to be a trend to smaller more precise munitions like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Diameter_Bomb "SDB Focused Lethality Munition (FLM) Under a contract awarded in September 2006, Boeing is developing a version of the SDB I which replaces the steel casing with a lightweight composite casing and the warhead with a focused-blast explosive such as Dense Inert Metal Explosive (DIME). This should further reduce collateral damage when using the weapon for pin-point strikes in urban areas." Better to take out the 3rd floor office than to knock the entire building down with a 2,000 pound....close enough to count.Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!”
normiss 897 #7 April 17, 2015 The new Navy Virginia Payload Module upgrades are also of great interest. 75% increase in strike capabilities in one package! I miss sitting over the dry docks at Mare Island watching a reactor replacement and upgrade. Our boats are the best in the world!

normiss 897 #9 April 17, 2015 It's only like $300 mil per boat upgrade. There are JOBS on the line man! UNION jobs! Part of the reason why I didn't re-up or take any DoD jobs when I got out. As much as I LOVED the tech I was working on, I no longer wanted to support a killing industry.
