At what point did we become a society that thinks that apologizing on social media is acceptable, rather than going back to that towing company and apologizing to the employee in person?Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. mrubin 0 #11 April 17, 2015 So should anyone who is rude to a towing company employee lose their job or just public figures? Why is she being treated any differently? She made a mistake and acted like an asshole. I've worked in retail and if everyone who ever was an asshole to me or a coworker lost their job, the unemployment rate would be a lot higher."I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Boomerdog 0 #12 April 17, 2015 Quotecorrection it was a towing company employee. Wow...looks like Regina George is not a fictional character after all. FWIW: Directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., Arlington County is a for lack of a better phrase, a heavily populated "bedroom community," with a lot of small business government contractors etc. It's pretty saturated and parking is a premium. When you see a business post a towing sign warning non-customers that vehicles will be towed, they're not kidding and towing companies (particularly this one) are all too happy to tow violators. The story (so far) is that she parked in a lot owned by a Hunan restaurant (apparently closed) to go across the street to a bar. Perhaps she did not want anyone spotting her car in the Bar's parking lot. Anyway, her car gets towed and the rest is on You Tube.

Andy9o8 2 #16 April 17, 2015 mrubinSo should anyone who is rude to a towing company employee lose their job or just public figures? Why is she being treated any differently? She made a mistake and acted like an asshole. I've worked in retail and if everyone who ever was an asshole to me or a coworker lost their job, the unemployment rate would be a lot higher. She was disciplined because, by her own choice, she was hired to be part of the public face of ESPN (for which she's presumably very well-compensated), which means that she must comport herself properly, especially when out in public, and not do anything that would damage the public image of her employer, whose stock in trade is its public image. By invoking "who she was", she was impliedly invoking ESPN, and thus her conduct of (arguably) moral turpitude reflects poorly on ESPN. Yes, it's a code of (especially public) conduct more burdensome than the average schmoe must adhere to, but it was part of the deal in exchange for her compensation. I can almost guarantee you that her (presumed) employment contract's language supports this; although even if she has no contract and is an employee-at-will (which I doubt) the implied terms of her employment would still support this. In simplified terms, she's a public figure representing her employer and is held to a higher standard of conduct. Not all that different from college football players who represent their universities. Represent the school with class and dignity, and you'll play. Do stupid shit to make the school look bad, you face discipline in one way or another. There will be no addressing the customers as "Bitches", "Morons" or "Retards"! When you're a TV reporter visible to thousands or millions of viewers, your employer expects you to conduct yourself with class in public or private.
