It looked like there was a small opening on the side of the blade so I would imagine you'd have to stab the blade over halfway into someone in order to be able to inject the gas.

All it needs is a little bit. Inject some gas into a vein and a rather quick death comes from embolism. A bolus of air into a vein is a pretty effective.
