Working on holidays.

Recommended Posts

I know this comes up around Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I've been thinking on it a lot more lately so thought I'd bring it up.

What are your views?

I don't see why it's become such an issue with retail workers. Others work holidays without it being an issue.
No matter how slowly you say oranges it never sounds like gullible.

I think I may have run the full gamut on this.

Early in my life I worked in a part of the industry where the motto was, "we work while others play." Working on a holiday, any holiday, was 100% expected by everyone from management to lowliest worker.

Years later I worked at another company and its head was a bit of a religious zealot. His view was that NO ONE should EVER work on certain holidays, so he forced the closure of the company at certain times and those times if you wanted to get paid, that's when you spent your vacation time.

I now work as a freelancer and generally speaking a good time for me is around certain holidays where the regular guy goes out for the holiday and I can fill in for him or there's extra work to do because of a holiday push or something.

Neither Fezziwig nor Scrooge, they simply are something to be dealt with.

I'll admit I've gotten into trouble with people that do want holidays off due to religious beliefs. They don't have to be zealots but I think they don't necessarily see the whole picture.

Like quade, I've been on all sides of it.

For me personally I like the idea of giving people some days where they know they can be with their family. If the company needs to operate on those days, then incentivize working on them to get the line dogs to volunteer perhaps.

My current company gives me unlimited paid vacation time (within reason, of course), but is open most days that are considered holidays. We closed for a couple of days around the end of the year, and I think on Thanksgiving day. I tend to add a couple days around those if I am going to be dragged into family stuff. Otherwise, I'd work Thanksgiving or Christmas, they're just another day to me. In fact, the days when nobody is around are the best days for me to work, since I can concentrate on what I'm doing instead of dealing with the litany of questions I get.

^This.

It's somewhat surprising to think back over the years of the different environments I've worked in.

I think I miss the on-call pay from Schwab the most. For 3 years I was the ONLY network engineer on-call. It doubled my pay. B|

>I'm sure you've seen the petitions to boycott such and such business.

Sure. I tend to ignore them. If someone does not like the policies of a business*, the best and most effective method to deal with it is to quit and get a job at a better place of business. If enough people do that, the company folds, and its annoying policies go away.

(* - excepting things like putting workers at risk for injury or death, discrimination against religions/races etc)

Nice. I'm the only person at my company that can really do my job which means I'm technically always on call, but we're a startup so that's not totally abnormal.

My boss can do most of it but I know and have accepted that even if I'm on vacation there could be things he can't do and might need help with, so until I hire and train a minion I know that I have to only vacation to places where I can get to a decent internet connection within about 4 hours if I absolutely have to. Also means no travel without the laptop :D

The simple option is if you dont want to work holidays quit. If you cant quit then suck it up buttercup. The way our schedule works out you work 3 Christmas in a row then you get 6 off. The part that sucks is 3 of the 6 of your off Christmas days your working Christmas eve. And that goes for every holiday. Work it 3 times off it 6, and if it has an "eve" you work that 3 times too.

If your the unfortunate soul that switches shifts at the wrong time when your just getting off your 3 and onto another shifts starting 3 then you work 6 Christmas in a row!

I'm a nurse, I get double time for working holidays... But I always knew being in healthcare that working holidays was part of the deal.

Retail workers on average don't make shit, perhaps $10 an hour, once upon a time in this country, the idea of nonessential personnel working major holidays was considered immoral. Now, those same folks who are worried about a "War" on Christmas, have no problem not letting the local mall workers spending it with their families.

Thats because its a starter job, not a career for a 30 year old. You eat shit when your young and building a future so you can have that job that gives paid vacations. Retail, walmart, mcdonalds workers need to understand that shit. Making a big macs your entire life is not supposed to be a career.

Didn't want to offend anyone, so I just hit reply. I think we need to be very careful about "knocking" those that do work/make careers from retail or fast foods or any other " starter" jobs. We don't know the circumstances, life choices, or responsiblites people have had or have.

I was blessed enough to be able to go to school and even though some may doubt it I did very well. Others haven't been so blessed.

I respect anyone that is working I don't care what the job is.

Good let having to work your birthday or Easter to motivate your ass to get a better job. Giving them paid holidays and $15 min wage only makes them a permanent fixture. Don't fall for its the best I can do. That only means it's the best I want to put out for.

My wife works in retail, I do the cop thing, holidays for us are just another day most of the time.
We both chose our careers, so we deal with it, so do our kids.

Sometimes it's an advantage in dealing with extended family politics. It's nice to just shrug my shoulders and say "I have to work"................

"Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"

Here's your problem... Perhaps 10% of the population is at the age where a "starter" job may be appropriate, yet, 25% oll all available jobs pay the same as "starter" jobs. The Blue collar section of the middle class is becoming obsolete.

If you pay real close attention, you may notice that every worker, over the age of 22 at fast food or Walmart, is not a lazy sloth.

And FWIW, In the grand scheme of things, I'm an Athiest. I remember just a few years ago, driving to work and the streets were empty on the nights of Thanksgiving and Xmas Not so much the last couple of years. It's not the "War on Christmas" killing the holiday, it's greed. I bet in 10 years, traffic on Christmas will be indistinguishable from traffic on Presidents' Day.

Good more days to get useless plastic china shit we dont need, and more sales taxes collected.
