quade 4 #1 March 29, 2015 http://www.hbo.com/#/documentaries/going-clear Based on what I believe to be a pretty balanced book all things considering; leadership full blown nuts, majority of members just trying to find something that helps them, and some unfortunately appear to meet the definition of religious cult slaves. If nothing else, should be interesting.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

quade 4 #3 March 30, 2015 TriGirlHow was it? I don't have HBO, so I'll probably have to order this on Netflix. I just finished watching it a few minutes ago. It's good. It's a condensed retelling of a number of the stories by way of interview with (I want to say eight?) former members of Scientology as well as the guy who wrote the original book. All of the interviewees were either VERY high level when they were in Scientology or a couple of Hollywood types; the most famous of which being Paul Haggis, the film director. The book was more in depth and I'd even say pretty fair showing some of the "good" Scientology has done in just focusing some people and helping them. I think that's true of a lot of religions and if just left at that, well, they'd all be fairly harmless. Those are the average, run of the mill, members. Do what works and gets you through the day; no harm no foul. The first bit of crazy comes into play when you learn about the history of L. Ron Hubbard. OCD science-fiction writer, compulsive lair, all sorts of bad stuff, BUT happened to come up with one particular book about what he thought would cure all the world's problems. Other people really are the ones that turned it into a religion, so he ran with it. He started to believe his own bullshit (so it seems) and got carried away, but most people should have recognized it for what it was. Where it really takes off into cult looney toons is the moment of Hubbard's death and there is an internal coup placing David Miscavage at the helm. It's really worth the watch though, and if you're still interested, the book is still out there too for greater detail.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
ryoder 1,590 #4 April 3, 2015 Salon interview with the director: http://www.salon.com/2015/04/03/alex_gibney_on_scientology%E2%80%99s_culture_of_vitriol_and_hate_if_you_do_leave_they_go_after_you_hard/ "Yeah, Shelly Miscavige is one of them. It’s a really interesting story because it’s related. There were also people – and this stuff is not in Larry’s book — but there were people who were so close to talking that would have been great, because they were well-known celebrities. Former members, or people who were half-in, half-out. There are plenty more individual episodes, similar stories to the ones we have in the film. We had to pick and choose. Our four-hour cut includes a lot of that material." So there is apparently a longer cut in existence."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. quade 4 #5 April 3, 2015 Would be nice if HBO made that available on-line right next to the main doc.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

SkyDekker 1,465 #8 April 6, 2015 Watched it over the weekend. Looks like the biggest "crime" committed was granting Scientology church status.
masterblaster72 0 #9 April 6, 2015 I watched it over the weekend as well. Nothing really new that I haven't heard before, other than the testimony of some of the top people who left in recent years. The maker of the doc did a good job of compiling a lot of important information into two hours. I hope it gets a lot of views and changes the minds of people already in the "church." I can imagine the mudslinging will begin soon from the Scientology goons toward the interviewees and makers of the documentary. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
