Is Lindsey Graham off his meds or taking too many?

Recommended Posts

This is absolutely bizarre. A U.S. Senator explaining his plan to overthrow the government.

Is this like Reagans joke about "outlawing Iran, bombing will begin in 5 minutes" ??
Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done.
Louis D Brandeis

Where are we going and why are we in this basket?

Update: Graham's spokesperson has clarified to Bloomberg that when Graham said "I would literally use the military to keep them in if I had to," that statement was "not to be taken literally." Glad that's been cleared up.

If he was serious about running for POTUS, he just torpedoed those plans.

I have to think he was joking because I cannot fathom any congressman saying anything like that for real.

It's just not something to joke about in his position. :S

Send him an email to complain about it. Oh wait, that's right this is the same guy who announced proudly that he has never sent an email in his life. He is clearly a forward thinker and exactly who we want in the White House.

>A U.S. Senator explaining his plan to overthrow the government.

He's not planning to overthrow the government. He just wants to use the military to force Congress to appropriate money to the projects he wants. And since one of the things he wants is more military spending, the soldiers involved will surely be very motivated.

I literally can't see any downside.

Well, let's peel back a layer... no other reporter in the room posted it because they got it, however:

Three days later, the web site of libertarian pundit/reporter Ben Swann–who was in New Hampshire last weekend for the Free State Project-aligned Liberty Forum–posted "exclusive audio" of the quote. Swann is no fan of Graham's hawkish politics.

From the Bloomberg report above.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

Rebuking McConnell's rhetoric? Check
Rebuking the President's rhetoric? Check
Explaining that overzealousness on the issue has set back reason and discussion? Check.
Putting a dig at religion as being contrary to reason? Check.

Compare this with the usual discussion. A breath of fresh air.

Whatever you're taking, Senator, keep on it and maintain the dose.

Maybe they should address this minor issue:

Quote

"In some cases, though, you have elected officials who are shills for the oil companies or the fossil fuel industry and there's a lot of money involved," Obama said. "Typically in Congress the committees of jurisdiction, like the energy committees, are populated by folks from places that pump a lot of oil and pump a lot of gas."

To me the major issue is this type of rhetoric. What Graham did was strip through it and say that there is a balancing to occur.

Graham said pretty much my thoughts. I am not a shill for the oil companies. The President takes the lowest road possible. Are there shills for the oil company? Probably. Will the President name them? No. Because most aren't.

Here's a question: is what the President said helpful in terms of reaching an accord? Is the President sounding like someone who is serious about solving the issue?

No. Problems don't get solved like that. The President would rather issue affronts. So would McConnell. Hurling insults and ad hominems is easier than cooly explaining.

Graham did something remarkable. He cut the shit. He didn't give partisan rhetoric. He didn't insult anybody or impugn their character. He just laid out his thinking, his fears and his concerns. The only thing he blamed is impassioned rhetoric for not getting something done with it.

And I think he's right. Positioning is all we see. He didn't lay out a position. He put out interests. It is how bridges are gapped.

Well, yes. But I alsl hunk that in hindsight he has a point. It became and emotional issue. It's like Justice Ginsburg blaming Roe v Wade for the ongoing abortion debate.

I think Al Gore was raised because he's a figurehead. It DID make things more difficult to reach an accord. The extremes got inflamed and it led to the last decade of posturing.

The blame should not rest solely on Al Gore. But he's the big dog on this issue. Did Al Gore actually help reach an accord? Hell no. And there was an equal and opposite reaction.

>Other than of course blaming Al Gore for the GOP having a hard time coming up
>with an Environmental Policy.

Well, that's completely different. Not blaming Al Gore would be like not blaming Obama. It's just not done.

So his acknowledgement of a lack of an environmental policy is to be trolled. I see.

The same old shit.

Edited to add: I'll put it this way. If Gore takes the credit for it (I don't recall him turning down a Nobel Peace Prize) then he gets his share of the blame for side effects. Bush takes credit for toppling Hussein, he gets the blame for the after effects, too

So your intent was:

"Graham did something remarkable. He cut the shit. He didn't give partisan rhetoric. He didn't insult anybody or impugn their character. Except Al Gore, because he deserved it."
