***Just saw this earlier today. Pretty sickening. Lady's just dancing on stage behind the singer when all of a sudden he throws a haymaker right to her face POW! :S

Hard to believe his bail was only $330.

Physical violence was not the right solution there, either.

That said, if you're not invited up there, you shouldn't be on stage, certainly not actually crowding the person that people are paying to see perform.

Yep. Where was security on that one? :S If none, he could have just told her to back the fuck up.

Chivarly is dead.

My first thought was that Billy Preston seems to be aging rather well.

The wost part was watching all those good old boys hoot and holler.

Most laypeople have difficulty wrapping their heads around the fact that the lawful function of pre-trial bail is to secure appearance at trial, not to impose punishment prior to trial and conviction.

and rightly so. Insanely high bail is one of those things that just makes me go "really?" when the person isn't a flight risk.

I hold open doors for strangers all the time because it's a nice thing to do if can, and had some halfwit go "I don't need you to hold a door open for me because I'm a woman!" recently, it was pretty sad. The idea that I wasn't holding the door open because she didn't have a Y chromosome, but because I had just opened it and the effort to hold it open would be vastly lower than the amount of effort for her to reopen it a moment later simply never occurred.

Plus if I was going to hold open a door based on me being a guy and wanting to score points, she'd have needed to be FAR more attractive to get that treatment :D

A friend of mine had to post something like $2900 bail after being arrested for driving with a week-expired license. No criminal history, and they wouldn't release on recognizance even though he was from a family with longstanding ties to the community, in a town of 85,000 people in the middle of nowhere. That was bordering on an 8th amendment violation in my mind.

That's very odd. Unless it's a whacked-out judge, there has to more to the story that we don't know about.

There could be, I can't claim to know everything. I was in the car when it happened though, he clearly had no idea it was expired until the cop came back and told us both to get out of the car, and that he was under arrest. Totally complied, absolutely no problem during the arrest (he even said "I'm not doubting you, can I just see my license though?", and sure enough it was expired). I asked the other cop that showed up if I could drive the car back, he went to the cruiser and chatted with my buddy, came back with the key and I took it to his house for him and told his parents what happened. That's the last part where I was personally a witness to proceedings, but the next day he shows up to class in the afternoon and said "Can you believe they charged $2,900 for bail?" ,and I couldn't so he showed me the receipt. My mind was blown.

Reminds me of a buddy back in high school. We were in a bar and he was eyeing up the girl across the room. She decided to walk over and ask him what he was looking at. His response:

Now that you are this close, I am wondering the same thing.

It kinda depends on the circumstances.

My experience with traffic violations/arrests/bail is that if the charge is serious enough to arrest someone, the bail is set at what the fine will be.
As in, driving after rev, fine is $500. Bail is $500. You get out, show up to court, get convicted, your bail is now your fine forfeiture. Plus any jail time.
Note: Don't bail out friends for traffic violations. You don't get your money back when they show up for court. The court keeps it for their fine.

As Andy noted, bail is simply to ensure you'll show up. In the case of traffic violations, it's to make sure your fine will be paid, although failing to appear is going to generate additional charges.

I can't see a simple driving on expired license generating a $2900 fine, so I'm going to guess that there's more to it than that.
