kallend 2,175 #51 October 28, 2014 Anvilbrother Quote Your subject header is "I hate college athletics." Sounds like an emotional rather than rational stance. He's just mad he got picked last in sports and is taking it out on the jocks now that he is their professor and has "power" over them. That's my take on it anyways. Since you clearly didn't bother to read the thread before resorting to the PAs, I'll repeat for your benefit that we don't have "jocks" at my school.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
Anvilbrother 0 #52 October 28, 2014 That's was not one lick of a PA my friend, but nice "flop" for the refs again. That was an observation based on my life experiences of teachers vs athletes, and your emotionally charged title. If it isn't true fine, but that's how I see it. Ps if you want to know what that personal life experience is I will let you know it's very relevant. Postes r made from an iPad or iPhone. grue 1 #53 October 28, 2014 Well, just remember it's not always like that. I was a two-sport university athlete, and while I hate what college basketball and football are, there was a lot less pressure for those of us on the ice hockey and soccer teams because we're not the "face" of college athletics. That's not to say we didn't have our share of people who probably wouldn't have been admitted if it weren't for athletic prowess, just an anecdotally much lower proportion. Interesting too how professional basketball and football seem to have the most criminal drama with their players, too…cavete terrae.
kelpdiver 2 #54 October 28, 2014 grue Interesting too how professional basketball and football seem to have the most criminal drama with their players, too… If Patreus hadn't run the Olympics on carbon fiber legs, I doubt the world would have followed the murder trial. NFL and NBA transgressions get more press than any other sport here. In Europe that would probably be the leaders for the teams in the Premiere League. kelpdiver 2 #55 October 28, 2014 GeorgiaDonWe might also assume you were the kid who couldn't make it past freshman calculus, so now you hate anyone who could. And of course that "take on things" is just as useless as your "take on things". When I hear people (and particular legislators) crap on athletics as an institution, it's pretty unlikely that sports are a part of their lifestyle, past or present. They dwell on the negatives while ignoring the rest.

kelpdiver 2 #57 October 28, 2014 grue I think this is interesting, though perhaps not great science: http://www.vocativ.com/culture/sport/nfl-arrest-rates/ the funny thing here is looking at the US arrests for the entire population. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2012/crime-in-the-u.s.-2012/persons-arrested/persons-arrested 12.2 million arrests in 2012 / 320M people x 100,000 (the same formula used in the article ) = 3812, or 54% higher than the 2466 high they cited for football players. And if we examined black arrest rates, that national average is much higher. The DUI rate for the players, otoh, does seem disproportionately higher than the national average. kelpdiver 2 #59 October 30, 2014 kallendAnother example of ethical lapse driven by college athletics. oh, my! Potential recruits getting alcohol and being shown co-eds in a SELF REPORTED incident that involved 23 being punished. This is on par with the Chicago charity that was pouring beers shots on the marathon 3 weeks ago. The service academies are back of the pack when it comes to Div I athletics. Blue Chip recruits are not going there.

This may be why it lasted so long.
