ryoder 1,590 #1 October 3, 2014 This wasn't just jamming; It was a Denial-Of-Service attack. http://boingboing.net/2014/10/03/fcc-fines-marriott-for-jamming.html The FCC should permanently ban them from operating *any* WiFi equipment."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. kelpdiver 2 #2 October 3, 2014 ryoder The FCC should permanently ban them from operating *any* WiFi equipment. It appears to have occurred only at a single hotel, rather than a home office directive. So a broad penalty is not really called for, and in the aggregate would be worse for the customers.
turtlespeed 226 #3 October 4, 2014 kelpdiver*** The FCC should permanently ban them from operating *any* WiFi equipment. I think they should be made to make restitution to those affected, whether they were affected directly by cost, or by proxy. 1st: Prove that you paid the bill for their wireless >>Easy enough, it would be on your bill. 2nd: (Not so easy): Prove your business or entity was affected by the jamming. The fine should be a standard one for all - 5000 US.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
freethefly 6 #4 October 6, 2014 I was at the Nashville airport Marriott two years ago for a company meeting. My MiFi was jammed. $20.00 per day if you wished to use their connection."...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Andy9o8 2 #5 October 6, 2014 QuoteMarriott issued the following statement Friday afternoon defending its actions: "Marriott has a strong interest in ensuring that when our guests use our Wi-Fi service, they will be protected from rogue wireless hot spots that can cause degraded service, insidious cyber-attacks and identity theft," And I say they're stone-cold liars. a les guillotines! ryoder 1,590 #6 October 6, 2014 I've learned that Cisco provides this function they call "rogue containment" in their wireless LAN controllers. The intention is to disable unauthorized APs that someone plugged into a companies wired network. I also found reports on the NANOG mailing list of the headaches caused by idiots enabling this in buildings shared by multiple businesses. http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/technology/roguedetection_deploy/Rogue_Detection.html#wp44564"There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones.
