Scrumpot 1 #26 July 31, 2006 Quoteare there S&TAs or DZOs out there who *are* actually grounding people who consistently cause problems? Actually Krisanne, yes there are! But then the only other problem from there is the dropzone "down the street" who will then take that jumper in right behind that, for his/her $$. Also (as someone else pointed out) "sad but true". coitus non circum - Moab Stone
wildman2231 0 #27 August 1, 2006 This is interesting. As a new "experienced" jumper at my dz,I want to work at spot landings. BUT, I have been told that I shouldn't go for the "X", because the guys like to swoop it. I'm usually between those guys and the tandems which exit last. And the tandems are going for the X for their tandem vids. As I usually pull higher, the swoopers on hp canopies are usually long gone, and I'm swivelling my head to keep an eye on tandems behind and or above me. I go wide crosswind or spiral to keep a good seperation. I will be the 1st one to land out a little. No problem. Suppose I get a new rig and want to swoop or go for spot? Is it ok to put a frisbee out there 100yds. away? I HAVE seen canopies to close for my comfort there,(like 8 at a time) all on approach not yards but FEET apart.(1 occasion). I understand race car drivers have that respect, BUT! they are'nt doing donuts in the pits. Having more than 1 spot to spot for could be really be a plus. OR would it possibly create a pattern conflict/hazard? I certainly don't want to be a hazard to other traffic and am aware of canopies around me. BUT! I worry about that guy as I gain experience, thats 200' above me, Is he doing a 180? 270? in front of me?,around me? I'm slow, he's fast...don't assume anyone is following the pattern I believe. I am aware of my ground speed and approach. YEP! I do S turns. Sometimes flat, sometimes I flare a little early or intentionally stall, then release to try to shorten my approach. Would it be ok if I bring my own spot marker? or frisbee? and place it aways away? I'm getting the impression that if I'm a new flier I don't or shouldn't land near the dz,regardless of my ability to do so unless I swoop or tandem? Should I land out in the beans?(been there). I hope not. If its ok with the dz I'll bring a frisbee and try to stay out of the way. Is this common to many DZ's?I'm fine...crazy people don't know they're crazy...No,Really! kelpdiver 2 #28 August 1, 2006 definitely feel free to insert a frisbee or a orange cone out there. Often the X or the peas is the closest part of the LZ and full of traffic, so set up your own target further out. When working of accuracy requirements for the B license I had many jumps where canopy traffic dictated giving up the target. Just as the swoopers have to evaluate if conditions allow an HP landing, you have to decide as well. Some LZs have a big X out far for the students and I think it's great. Lots of space to work it out, and some exercise on landing.
PhreeZone 20 #29 August 1, 2006 Snag me this weekend at the DZ and we can talk about how a lot of this relates to the local conditions that we have. But the center of a marker is just that.. the center of a marker. Unless you are on a demo it does not hurt to land at another location completly.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
popsjumper 2 #30 August 1, 2006 Good stuff, PhreeZOne...help the guy out...from the tone of his post, I get the feeling that he is feeling left out or in the dark and needs a "wing man". Wildman, if you're ever in GA and come to the Farm, find me and I'll do the same for you here, no problem, no question. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. riggerrob 643 #31 August 1, 2006 Yes, observe canopy traffic for half a day, then toss your frisbee into the quietest corner of the DZ. "Declare" your frisbee to the instructor/coach/judge, etc. who is coaching you and "go for it."
matthewcline 0 #32 August 1, 2006 Phreezone, Only my opinion, but the front along the tent camping area is usually fairly quiet. You know behind where "Casa de Cline" was, over the 4th of July. It would give him 200 meters of seperation easy from the peas. plus he could usethe corn field to the south as his play ground (wind allowing of course) with out others needing to pass through since they will be over the main landing area (mostly). An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
wildman2231 0 #33 August 2, 2006 Thanks guys! See ya there...if the heat lets up a little. Last weekend was great! It was so nice on my third jump to do nothing but cheese and watch alt. and check out the clouds! And watch a world champion diving below me! It was a little surreal. Hope to see you next weekend,or in 2 weeks...dam bills Ramen noodles ain't so bad...but sun tea beats the hell out of Tang! Was kinda wierd tho....I counted a full 6 seconds before I jumped...and watched her track straight up the line of flight!(although in a hell of a dive) and I was opening alot higher. It was really cool! I turned and did a short track 90* to line of flight and opened between cloud tops at 4500. It was a beautiful day despite the heat... See ya soon, Blue Skies...I'm fine...crazy people don't know they're crazy...No,Really!
