Amazon 7 #26 July 7, 2014 champuMy only complaint about the Prius (and hybrids in general) isn't about them directly, but all those car pool lane stickers people that bought them received. Car pool lanes are on freeways, where hybrids don't have an efficiency advantage over any other small-engine or diesel car (which didn't get said stickers), and driving alone in your hybrid is just as bad for traffic congestion as driving alone in your dodge viper. So now you pack the car pool lane with more vehicles forcing traffic to stop and start more and negating its entire purpose. So yeah, if you hum a tune to yourself about saving the planet while driving your Prius alone in the car pool lane during rush hour I hope you crash... ...into another Prius. I am kinda partial to my diesel vehicles... The new convertible bugly is only getting about 47MPG while driving to work... and during the snow days I broke out my 2000 Bugly( 50+MPG) with the studded snow tires to prevent my pretty new bugly from getting dented by those who have Californicated our roads. It seems that stupid people who do not realize that slippery stuff on the roads with hills requires a different form of driving than when you were at Huntinton Beach. Luckily I can flex my drive go in early.. leave early before the road turns into a parking lot.
Amazon 7 #27 July 7, 2014 PLFXpert Us, too (FWIW). The amount of money saved on gas/maintenance is unbelievable considering my husband drives a lot around town in any given day for his business. For personal, it is a heck-of-a-lot easier to throw the kayaks on top of the Prius than my SUV. I do very little driving. When I do, my SUV is amazing for hauling large fuzzy-butts. Removed the third-row seating, threw in a nice, plush carpet with Kongs, and roll down the back window for shnoots to get air time. The Harley is just for fun. If anything, I understand why people would hate us for that...because we are just throwing out emissions for fun all up and down the coast whilst humming about saving the sea turtles. The Fuzzy children have been banned permanently from my new convertible... when I need to transport them I break out the fuzz mobile..The Blonde Bear loves to get LOTS of Nose-Air. I do not care HOW much I have tried to clean it... there is ALWAYS ... a plethora of blonde SNOW DOG fuzz that will find its way into every crevice. Big Red... does ok.. it gets 22 MPG on the road .. I do love the Cummins and there is no way I am going to waste fuel with the dumbassery of those in the linked article.
Amazon 7 #28 July 7, 2014 Stumpy Paying a load of money to make their truck even less fuel efficient so that they pay a lot more for gas - those old boys sure stuck it to the man. Kinda feel the joke's on them. +4.25/gal for diesel
Amazon 7 #29 July 7, 2014 CanuckInUSA Of course this is an over the top shake your head type of thing these guys are doing. I can understand their desire to protest, but there are better ways to protest. But doesn't the OP of this thread own and operate a big ass pickup truck to pull their big ass boat they have bragged about having? I could care less that the OP needs a pickup truck to haul their big ass boat with. But I do find it ironic that they would be complaining about other pickup truck owners when they themselves drive a pickup truck. Or did they trade their pickup truck in and now tow that big ass boat of theirs in a Smart car, assuming they could even get their big ass into a Smart car. LOL PS: most people around where I live who don't use their turn signals tend to be the recently arrived immigrants who learned how to drive from other recently arrived immigrants, who learned how to drive from other recently arrived immigrants, who got their license from a Cracker Jack box. Use of your turn signals are common courtesy towards all the other drivers on the road. But relying on a blinking turn signal is just dumb. If you rear end someone because they turned without signalling, it is still your fault, and don't ever rely on a driver actually turning while their lights are blinking. Far too many people are simply not paying close enough attention while they drive. I can still get 15 MPG with my BIG ASS RED 4x4 Cummins haulin my 27' Chris Craft OVER the Cascades to the sunny side of the state.. or down to the mouth of the Columbia River to kill sammings like I will be doing in August. Eat your fuckin heart out.

billvon 3,119 #31 July 7, 2014 >Car pool lanes are on freeways, where hybrids don't have an efficiency advantage >over any other small-engine or diesel car (which didn't get said stickers), Well: 1) They do still have an advantage over other cars (on average) 2) you could indeed get stickers for natural gas cars at least in California -however- 3) hybrids are no longer eligible for single driver HOV lane usage out here, which I think makes sense. HOV lanes are intended to be used to increase road carrying capacity and decrease traffic overall, and hybrids don't accomplish this.

champu 1 #35 July 8, 2014 base698Quoteand driving alone in your hybrid is just as bad for traffic congestion as driving alone in your dodge viper. 1) That is factually untrue. A Viper would get what, 24 mpg highway, to a Prius that gets 41 mpg even going 80 mph? Fuel economy isn't a factor in how a vehicle adds to traffic congestion. Overall length and how many passengers are in it define how a vehicle affects traffic congestion (driving habits notwithstanding.) Bill reiterated what I was getting at in his number 3) comment below. base6982) Hybrids haven't been eligible for HOV stickers in California for many years. It's the Tesla and pure electric drivers that get the benefit now. In my last post I intentionally used the past-tense when referring to people having received the stickers for buying hybrids. Giving them to electric car buyers is also stupid. billvon>Car pool lanes are on freeways, where hybrids don't have an efficiency advantage >over any other small-engine or diesel car (which didn't get said stickers), Well: 1) They do still have an advantage over other cars (on average) 2) you could indeed get stickers for natural gas cars at least in California -however- 3) hybrids are no longer eligible for single driver HOV lane usage out here, which I think makes sense. Are they simply not handing out more stickers or have they expired/revoked ones they've handed out? I actually don't drive very often (much less on the freeway) but when I do I still see plenty of one passenger Priuses with the HOV stickers on them. They were valid past when they still issued them, but they're not valid now. So you just have a carpool cheating asshole in a prius....hardly the only one of those! I presume they're just relying on the lower enforcement rate - I don't imagine the CHP is cutting them any slack.
kelpdiver 2 #38 July 8, 2014 wolfriverjoe All they have to do is inspect the truck. If the emissions equipment has been modified, they write a ticket. The fines for tampering with emissions equipment are rather severe. I did a quick search, but couldn't find it. IIRC, it can be in the tens of thousands of dollars. I don't think they're modifying the emissions equipment, but rather adding an entire new smoke stack and smoke generator.
kelpdiver 2 #39 July 8, 2014 Andy9o8 When my kids learned to drive I taught them to always give an extra watch-out for pickup trucks: type-for-type, most likely to drive aggressively and pull asshole shit without warning "just because they can", and least likely to use their turn signals... pretty much ever. When I first started lane splitting, the Volvo was still the most predictable menace on the road. Never had a fucking clue where the turn signals were. Then those people started foolishly buying Exploders and Expeditions for the 'safety.' But in the past decade in SF, the prius has become the attractive draw for those who don't signal. The other scary marking is "Zipcar."

I took it to my mechanic and asked for a code on his equip. He replied it was an EVAP code but not to worry. My guess is that it smokes. In the UK they used (still do?) to have a thing called red diesel which was purely for agricultural use. The difference in colour was due to a dye but the BIG difference was cost. It was taxed at about 10% of standard diesel rates so was much much cheaper. You weren't allowed to put it in anything taxed for the road and could get in quite a lot of trouble for filling the family car with it I think, but pretty sure plenty of farmers would do that occasionally.Never try to eat more than you can lift

billvon 3,119 #49 July 8, 2014 >Don't you have to do engine mods to make cooking oil work though? Well, to do it right on straight vegetable oil, yes. However: 1) If it's always warm out then you can USUALLY use SVO without modifications. In colder weather you have to heat the whole fuel system to use SVO. 2) Some people mix SVO with kerosene or regular diesel, and that gives you better (but not ideal) cold weather performance. 3) If you make biodiesel (which is vegetable oil + sodium methoxide) then you can treat it like regular diesel.
