Who is going to work at strawberry farms when there is no more illegal immigrants??

Recommended Posts

Around here we don't have a steady stream of illegal immigrants to use as a slave labor workforce, so for strawberry picking we use students and other groups who don't have a lot of choice on being picky about the kind of work they accept. Although last few years there have been some attempts to temporarily import some folks from poor countries like Thailand to do these kind of jobs the natives feel are beneath them.
Your rights end where my feelings begin.

***Are you going to bake underneath the sun for minimum wage??

Didn't think so.

Already did that for two summers on a farm.

Never liked picking strawberries. Too slow and too much time on the ground.

Didn't mind hoeing, picking bins of corn, banding cauliflower, planting sprouts.

It's actually pretty decent fulfilling work and generally not too dangerous as you're not working machinery. Gives you a good appreciation for the food on your table. Perfect for high-school ages 15-18.

Landscaping is good too and generally pays better.

Pickin' cotton, you have to watch-out for rattle-bugs! Sure, agricultural work is hard but there is something about it that gives you a good feeling at the end of the day... besides being tired. The school year used to be scheduled around planting and harvest seasons. The work kept kids outside and off the streets. Technology put an end to that. Now, obesity is at an all-time high along with heart disease. I recall my Dad telling me when I was a kid; "A hard day's work won't kill you!" He was right! There were many more that followed, too.

I don't understand why I have become your target of insults as of late, but I hope you're enjoying your little immature world.

?? It was a joke; thought you'd chuckle. Sorry I didn't make that clear, but I'll own the mistake.

The post is gone now.

Well, I actually worked on a neighbors strawberry farm for a number of summers when I was a kid in Northern IN. I'm pretty sure I'm not an illegal immigrant.

Then show us your 'green card'!:ph34r: Just goes to show, people other than illegals can do that kind of work. It's good, honest work. It takes getting up and doing it.

No one. We will just import strawberries from Mexico. Right wingers will blame Obama.

yes yes, and the left will cry that's it's a victory to have eliminated 'slave' labor from the US and another horrible profit making industry - by pushing (out of sight and under the rug - if you can't see it, then they win) to foreign farms using fertilizers and contaminants to pollute the groundwater, and unregulated cleanliness methods for gathering and shipping the final product.

The left wing will blame the "one percenters" for making their strawberries more expensive.

and then the left will tax the strawberries excessively to 'show those darn one percenters whatfor' (the right won't fight hard, those in power love the taxes just as much) thus driving out strawberries from the market for all but the rich

then the Adkinites will decry strawberries as too high in simple sugars and too low in fiber

all hell will break loose, cats and dogs living together

Roxanne runs Gentleworks. A day rehabilitation center in Hartville Ohio. Who will harvest those fruits and vegetables? Developmentally disabled people will be thrilled to have a place where they have a job and contribute to society in whatever way they can. And they do a great job. They aren't fast but they are OCD. :P

Just tagging on at the end, the last 14 years of my forced stay in FL, another story for another time, I was surrounded by strawberry fields in Plant City. Mexicans picked the berries and they brought in the associated social problems.

My biggest complaint was that in the winter the farmers ran sprinklers to seal the berries in ice and protect them. This practice drops the water level in the aquifers causes sink holes and my well to stop pumping water.

I have never cared for strawberries and do not understand why some do.

What social problems are associated with "Mexicans" exclusively? Drugs? Gangs? Overcrowded housing? Burritos? Mariachi bands? Low rider cars?

In my area it was mostly gang activity and the additional burden on the local ER.

The point of my complaint was the farmers and their watering systems. During the freeze of 2008 there were over 700 sinkholes in Hillsborough County. Seven of them were within one mile of my residence. And, my well went dry.
