Gay Football League?

Recommended Posts

I saw this, and it took a minute to realize that anyone gave a rat's ass about this guy's sexual proclivities.

Given the range of misbehavior to which NFL types are prone, I am flabbergasted by all the attention this gets in the sports fan world. Maybe if he promised to be a gay RAPIST he would be accepted as one of the boys.

Admittedly, I do not follow football beyond when football players become newsworthy for their legendary transgressions, so it seems me that the sport is generally accepting of things that I consider unacceptable. I thus cannot fathom why they might make an issue about something that is, in and of itself, a non-event.

If anything, this has vindicated my loathing of NCAA and NFL football. I still won't watch a game if this guy gets drafted, but I would hope a team would pick him up for the free publicity.

You would think that some fans would buy tickets out of gay pride, and that others would watch to see the faggot get tackled. It's a win-win situation!

I probably won't pay enough attention to know how this turns out, but what little I know so far I find distasteful.

Gay people should not be discriminated against, but they should also not be given preferential treatment. I yearn for a world where people are hired based on their merits and not because of the special interest group they represent. There are thousands and thousands of college football players who will not get a phone call this weekend. But you can blame the media here for turning this into the gong show it has become. If this guy does not get drafted you know the media is going to go ape shit on the issue just as if this guy does not make one of the teams next year the media is going to go ape shit. The media would throw their own mother's into shark infested waters and proceed to chum the water if it meant furthering their agenda.

I think he should be drafted. Mister Irrelevant sounds like a good spot for him to be drafted in. Honestly scouts didn't have him touted that high in this years draft class because of his skillset on the football field. But now the obama administration is pushing 'make sure you accept gays OR ELSE' its become a sideshow.

But my kanuck friend said it best when he said this:

'Gay people should not be discriminated against, but they should also not be given preferential treatment. I yearn for a world where people are hired based on their merits and not because of the special interest group they represent'

well said.

I wholeheartedly agree - to a point. I worked for a group where lesbians were the employees of choice.

The reasons given whereby the manager preferred lesbians had to to with the amount of field work that was involved.

1) Their personal life NEVER came up, one way or another.

2) You did not have to worry about guys hitting on them much of anywhere.

3) They were not given to unexpected pregnancy.

4) They were not given to changes in work status on the basis of marital status.

etc.

As far as he was concerned, the women he hired were the perfect employees. Having depended upon the quality of their work, I am not sure if I could disagree.

Again, I agree. With certain exceptions (a track record of activities whose discussion is specifically proscribed on these forums, for example), I think ability, integrity and productivity should be the primary considerations for selection.

The Juilliard audition, where the board cannot see the applicant, is the ideal.

Those who would not do not have a voice. If you look at the magazines around the checkout at many a supermarket, you will be hard pressed to find a copy of U.S.News and World Report or Scientific American. Is this because of any attempt to dumb down the populus?

Nope.

It is because media adapted to a room-temperature IQ sells like hotcakes, and anything that presumes cognitive capability will gather dust.

In a sense I wish this guy could have simply made the cut or not on the basis of ability alone. Muddying the waters by mention of his sexuality makes a rational decision suspect:

"Heck, I'd love to hire the guy, but every time he leaves the bench the other team scores."

"You're just homophobic!"

"'Homophobic' actually means terrified of my kind, and I'm not. I just want to win the Superbowl. If having the Village People on the team would get me the ring, I'm all for it."

"You're just homophobic!"

Where did they say that? Or it is just that everything that happens in your world has something to do with Obama?

Its interesting though, I believe if Michael Sam had kept his mouth shut, he most likely would have been drafted much higher. For fucks sake, he was the SEC Defensive Player Of The Year in the toughest league in college football.

So basically, if I read this article right, there's a guy who is a draft prospect who DIDN'T perform all that well at the 'tryouts' or whatever they call them.

He happens to be gay.

So if he's NOT picked is it because he's gay or because he didn't perform well at the show?

Not that I care either way. Modern pro-sport are ultimately about money, which is why Sterling never tried to make the Clippers a winning team. He was raking in plenty of cash as it was, so why shell out the big bucks for the start players?

Now that you mention it, I read somewhere that his sack totals were a bit misleading. He got the majority of them in 3 games. Still was a very good player, but his defensive lineman teammate got drafted way ahead of him.

Okay, I get it.

"We're not picking you because you suck!"

"You're homophobic and you're discriminating against me because I'm gay!"

"No, we're all gay - or at least bi - and we're cool with that. Think Chicago Bears. We don't want you because you are not a very good football player."

"Oh. Never mind."

Well, he got picked. Went to the Rams in the 7th round.

Which is about where a lot of the prognosticators predicted he'd get picked.

Good skills, but not spectacular.
Not a great overall player, but a good situational guy.

If you don't follow pro football (hand-egg) reasonably closely, you may not realize that the NFL is so competitive, that the player's skills are the top consideration. How he will fit into the team (how his skills help the team on the field) is second. How he will fit into the locker room (how he will fit into the team as a member) is also there, but so is "will he stay out of jail."

I think his sexual orientation was well down the list on reasons he did or didn't get picked.

There are teams that will avoid picks that have "off field issues." They don't want to worry about that stuff.
Other teams (Patriots are a good example) will go after players with great skills, but questionable behaviors elsewhere. Belichek may be a cheater, but he's got a hell of a good record at reforming the league's "Bad Boys."

Interesting that he got picked by St. Louis. The central Midwest is quite accepting of alternative lifestyles. ;)

Contest: Insert juvenile double entendre here: _________ using the word "Rams". Prize awarded for best, um, entry.]

It's football. If he helps the Rams win, the fan base will be calling for the entire team to "Go Gay."

And yes, there will be lots of "Ram" jokes. Perhaps the only team that would have spawned more jokes would be the Packers.

This whole thing is just ridiculous...History has shown us that sports are about being good. If they weren't, people like Jackie Robinson (42) never would've been given the chance to pave the way. (42 - Great movie btw...my personal top 10)

...and let's not forget the original limp-wristed athlete, Glenn "batty boy" Burke.
