Wharton Study Shows the Shocking Result When Women and Minorities Email Their Professors

Mmm yeah.. about all that racism toward those white males suffering so much in acedemia

According to a segment produced by NPR, researchers led by the Wharton School's Katherine Milkman emailed 6,500 professors from 89 disciplines at the top 259 schools, pretending to be students. These emails replicated the same message; the only variable was the sender's name — for example, "Brad Anderson, Meredith Roberts, Lamar Washington, LaToya Brown, Juanita Martinez, Deepak Patel, Sonali Desai, Chang Wong, Mei Chen" — deliberately crafted in order to test the racial and gender bias in professor response.

SUUUURE tell me again about all that discrimination you face....

Trust me... you should try being in a group that actually does experience it.>:(

Perhaps your liberal professors aren't as squeaky clean as they would like to think they are.
Please don't dent the planet.

Perhaps its just cognitive dissonance in believing all of them are "libruls"

I think a big piece of it has to do with the act of asking somebody to mentor you. Lots of one-on-one and personal time together. There are significant reasons why, for instance, a smart old white man is going to be exceptionally hesitant about taking on a young FEMALE student on that basis. Not that it's going to be against the rules, but there is so much potential for trouble with wives and faculty.

I'm not saying it's right or there isn't a bias there, but it might not have anything to do with whether the old white man holds any ill will -- just just might not be willing to accept the potential trouble that could crop up in his personal and professional life.

This isn't just about academics either. There are certain jobs and situations old white men simply HAVE to steer away from in life if they want to stay out of trouble.

I'm not saying it's right -- I'm saying that's the way it is.

You mean those white men who can get into academia now?

Oh I don't know... still looks mighty white up here in WA.. so much that the head of Western Washington made mention of it.. and most people on campus supported diversity efforts.. But the right wing went NUTZ.. suhprize suhprize says Gomer Pyle.

The president of Western Washington University is trying to increase diversity on campus. Why that's making him the center of a lot of negative attention.
