Since the non-compliant policies are generally shitty, they probably can profit from it.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. Yes, many are shitty, but many are not, like the anecdote I related in the other thread. Self-employed and "1099" people who make the effort to buy private insurance generally also make the effort to vote; and you know what? They're pretty pissed at this. rhaig 0 #6 November 15, 2013 from what I've read, this is a proposed "administrative change". How is that going to effect passed legislation? It's not. He's basically saying "yeah... that's the law... but just ignore it for now." It's my feeling that if we have laws that are better left unenforced, they are bad laws (yes, I mean this in general, not just this case) and should be removed.-- Rob

Since the non-compliant policies are generally shitty, they probably can profit from it. It's not that simple. What the President did is similar to being late in applying the brakes and coming to a stop in the intersection. Since each state has its own insurance commissioner, they have procedures. These commissioners have already ruled what plans are invalid. The insurance companies have already complied to get rid of these plans and introduce the new plans for next year. So just because the President says now, six weeks before the end of the year, "All those cancelation letters? All that work you did eliminating those things? Well, go right on back and reverse everything you did. Then, go ahead and reintroduce those plans which you will have to cancel and re-re-reunderwrite again next year. Insurance commissioners - go ahead and put these plans on a fast-track for approval." The companies have spent the last three years retooling their companies and the entire industry. It's a bit silly to suggest they do a sudden u-turn. The California Insurance Commissioner has just announced that it is analyzing "options." So as it stands, today there isn't a single canceled insurance plan in Cali that can be renewed. I believe that it is the State of Washington's Insurance Commissioner that has said it won't undo what it has already started. And, of course, the reversal strikes at the very heart of the ACA's financing structure. The exchanges have to have these people in it in order to be "affordable." Meaning that the insurance prices for those in the exchanges this year will be high. One more thought: this is a Constitutional crisis. The President has just announced that he is going to ignore a law. A law named after him. Perhaps there is something in the law that provides discretion for a President to decide whether or not to enforce a law. The plans are still illegal! The GOP is now trying to put out a new bill that delays implementation. Which is, of course, fucking ridiculous in practice and in policy. I'd really be interested in seeing the GOP put forth a bill to repeal the ACA as a whole. In its entirety. The number 1 interest in Congress is self preservation. There are plenty of Democrats out there that I think would vote to repeal the ACA because they want to be reelected. Especially in the Senate. But since the GOP is totally incompetent, the House will put up a bill delaying implementation until after the 2014 elections. My wife is hotter than your wife.
