Not buying this. Nukes are a lot cheaper than maintaining a large military to defend the borders, and they're a hell of a lot cheaper than actual wars.

Unfortunately having a large set of nukes hasn't prevented us for keeping a large conventional military and engaging in military expeditionism around the globe.

no, but that was by choice. Given the benefit of oceans, and friendly Canadians to the north, we didn't need to do those things. We could return to a pre WW2 isolationist state and slash our military spending dramatically.
