my city does have compost nazis.

An article yesterday on the subject pointed out that many food products have aggressively conservative Sell By or Best by dates and that a considerable number throw everything away on that day.

Who is going to pay for collecting and distributing the food? Who is going to decide who receives free food? Are mandatory drug tests necessary to receive free food?

Most food products have too strict use by dates and the products can easily be used after the date. There used to be a trend around here among certain kind of people (students/hippies) to go trash hunting for free food from dumpster where shops were throwing away the 'bad' food that could no longer be sold. After the shops realized this the employees were told to 'destroy' the food, puncture any sealed container and damage the products, so that these people couldn't use the food. Also they added locks to the dumpsters. However after some negative publicity some shops started giving that food to non-profits that then distribute the food to some poor folks.

To spell it out for you on a deeper level, someone owns those houses and probably doesn't want some welfare queen with 10 children by 8 different deadbeat males, living in them and tearing them up.

We have tried building public housing for them and all they do is turn the neighborhood into a drug infested hell hole that requires they own a gun just to go back and forth when cashing their government checks.

How much does it cost to recycle and distribute thrown out food? Who knows, but I bet you did not think of that.
