IPCC Report Due Out Next Week

Recommended Posts

There's already a lot of discussion about the climate report coming out - just the first part (working group 1) next week. Both sides seem to be preparing for what is expected to come out of it. For example, realclimate has a thread about how models can never be accurate. Judith Curry has been posting some moderated commentary. Heartland released an "NIPCC" report that is available. I hope to read it soon.

But like it or not, anything that has "Intergovernmental" in it will have political undertones. Indeed, that's the JOB of the document to to be a guide to policymakers.

The issues that have been getting the most press are: (1) how will it deal with "The Pause"; and (2) what will be its report on CO2 sensitivity and their certainty (leaked portions of the report indicate that the potential range of future warming will increase (greater uncertainty due to the diagreement of observations with projections) but that the IPCC will INCREASE its assessment to indicate even greater certainty.

The question is: how should the IPCC deal with the pause? Will it acknowledge it (which many countries argue should not happen because it adds fuel to deniers)? Will it ignore it? Will it minimize it?

How about the observational data with relation to the models?

I'm very interested to see what happens here...

They'll do whatever it takes to maintain their pseuo-science quackery.
You stop breathing for a few minutes and everyone jumps to conclusions.

Here is the IPCC mission statement:

"The role of the IPCC is to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis the scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant to understanding the scientific basis of risk of human-induced climate change, its potential and options for adaptation and mitigation."
