"Perfect commercial sense"

Recommended Posts

From the BBC:

The chief executive of Chinese tech giant Lenovo - the world's biggest maker of personal computers -says he will share his bonus with his employees.

Yang Yuanqing will split around $3.25m with some 10,000 workers after the firm achieved record shipments and sales this year.

It is the second consecutive year that he has shared his personal bonus.

Professor Chris Roebuck is from CASS business school and has held senior positions in human resources at a number of international banks.

He told BBC World "it makes perfect commercial sense".

"We know that 60% of employees could give 30% more effort - if they thought the organisation was doing the right thing, they were led well and the chief executive cared about them. And this is exactly the way to do it."

...

The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

Personally I think the bonus should be given to ALL the employees equally, including the CEO and all the workers. It takes a team. Nice that he did it, of course, but it is still someone handing out what should not really be just theirs to hand out.

So they each get $325.00 assuming it is split evenly. My wife got a $5000.00 bonus last year but I don't recall reading about it on the news.

Nice to see you come clean and admit you admire the Chinese business model.

Wow - really? You really don't see the value to employee moral, even though the $ value is low?

Not only the value in employee morale, but if I were to buy a PC, I would definitely consider a Lenovo as I think this gesture reflects very favorably on the company. I would be happy to put my $ in a company led by people with such ethics.

You know, the Chinese are very good at propaganda. Looks like it worked for you. Rather than purchase a computer from an American or British company, you sold out to the Chinese. I know many will be happy when China owns your respective countries.

Good job.

:P .. Shame when people play the player and not the ball[:/]

Never done THAT have you?:D:D:D:D

CEO did a good thing for morale.

Question . . . did he have to pay taxes on that bonus?

If he is paying considerably out of pocket to boost the employee morale, then we should, maybe, consider this model.

That can only last so long here though, as it would soon become part of the salary structure. That is assuming that it isn't part of that CEO's package already.

I know - I'm such a skeptic. It would be awesome if it is actually a true give back. I just can't see it being more than PR.[:/]

Low is relative. That sum is average monthly pay for the Chinese workers.

I kept my $7,200.00 bonus...well I did give 10% as a gift to my pastor. Well let me take that back...after taxes I gave 10% to my pastor as a Christmas gift to him and his family, but then I kept the rest for myself:D.

I did spread it around a bit...buying 100LL for the plane, which can be quite expensive. A new head set when flying in turbine aircraft. And then I added to my emergency fund at my local credit union so they can make money on my money.

Sorry but Dell desktops are manufactured overseas.

"Assembly of desktop computers for the North American market formerly took place at Dell plants in Austin, Texas (original location) and Lebanon, Tennessee (opened in 1999), which have been closed in 2008 and early 2009, respectively. The plant in Winston-Salem, North Carolina received $280 million USD in incentives from the state and opened in 2005, but ceased operations in November 2010, and Dell's contract with the state requires them to repay the incentives for failing to meet the conditions.[40][41] Most of the work that used to take place in Dell's U.S. plants was transferred to contract manufacturers in Asia and Mexico, or some of Dell's own factories overseas. The Miami, Florida facility of its Alienware subsidiary remains in operation, while Dell continues to produce its servers (its most profitable products) in Austin, Texas. [38]"

+2 troll points for the "you are supporting the China overlords" thing
-1 troll point for not calling him a communist
+1 for the "propaganda" sound bite
+4 for the reflexive attack on Kallend
-10 for not blaming it on Obama
