Defense Contractor: Climate Change Could Create "Business Opportunities"

Raytheon is worried about the risks of global warming. But it also thinks climate-related "security concerns" could boost demand for its military products.

Wed Aug. 14, 2013

Of all the business opportunities presented by global warming, Raytheon Company may have found one of the most alarming. The Massachusetts-based defense contractor—which makes everything from communications systems to Tomahawk missiles—thinks that future "security concerns" caused by climate change could mean expanded sales of its military products.

Raytheon, it should be noted, isn't exactly gunning for catastrophic global warming. Quite the opposite, in fact: In February, the company received a "Climate Leadership Award" from the Environmental Protection Agency for publicly reporting and aggressively reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. It's working on renewable energy technologies. And it has publicly warned of significant climate-change-related risks to its business—from things like hurricanes, floods, droughts, and forest fires.
Raytheon anticipates "demand for its military products and services as security concerns may arise…as a result of climate change."

So it's particularly striking that these very same climate-induced disasters could also have a financial upside for Raytheon. Like many other companies, Raytheon regularly submits information to the nonprofit Carbon Disclosure Project about its carbon reduction efforts and how climate change could affect its business. In response to a question about climate-related opportunities, Raytheon wrote [registration required] last year that "expanded business opportunities are likely to arise as consumer behaviour and needs change in response to climate change."

I don't see any 'wings' involved here other than greed and fear mongering - It's cute how Raytheon is so upfront about it.

Clearly there are too honest to succeed in this new market. It's all about executive orders, legislative favoritism, and subsidies, subsidies, subsidies. Clearly they don't understand that offering a 'green' solution to the free market is a loser move. All the money will be sucked up by big brother.

"Business Opportunities" - a little late to the game compared to a lot of others. Like I said - cute. They might even be sincere about it - LMAO

Dave:

Those are some interesting texts. But, I can say that I thoroughly read "National Security and the Threat of Climate Change" and noticed that it was remarkably devoid of data. Rather, it was loaded with rhetoric and possibilities. For example, it predicted civil unrest in Egypt due to climate change. Now, years later, we have civil unrest in Egypt. Because we all know that predicting unrest in the middle east is like predicting snow in Phoenix in August - it's really going out on a limb.

I then noted the references - references including "An Inconvenient Truth." Um.....

But I also noted nap press and for fits and shiggles pulled up this little gem. www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=185 Opening sentence: "The earth's climate is changing, and associated predictions of future floods and droughts reverberate throughout the news media." We've heard it all before. This one was 35 years ago. I'm tired of it.

Raytheon - they've seen billions of dollars handed out by Uncle Sam for climate purposes. Raytheon wants to get in on that action.

All I know it that the enviros say the temp is going up
Unless it isnt
And we will have more huricanes
Unless we dont
The ice extent is shrinking
Unless it is growing
AWG will cause more rain
Unless it causes a drought
The ocean levels will rise
Or they will not
There will be more tornadoes
Unless there isnt
We will have more crime because of heat
Unless its cooler
We dont have to adjust the data
unless we do

I am sure this makes perfect sense to someone who polutes the minds of young people

Things are looking pretty good for North Pole ice right now. By "good" I mean there's a lot of extent, volume and the weather is such that it probably won't be losing much more.

In fact, this summer looks like it has been the coldest inm at least 30 years. See the attachment. The left wing does not like data such as this. They will, in fact, call it "weather" - which it is. But unlike last year where they were crowing about how little ice there is, they will simply say that "this is what we expected" - even though their prediction said that the tipping point was reached and the death spiral was irreversible.

Now I understand that the data we have is preliminary and raw. In the next few years it'll be adjusted to be one of the five hottest summers the Arctic has ever seen. But that's what climate change deniers do - take observations and compare to predictions and point out where the consensus said it wouldn't happen. Global sea ice? Largest extent ever measured.

The stages of global warming alarmism (and note - the public that feels they've been lied to all along understands it. Even alarmists have reasons why they've changed their tunes)

(1) Human activities are making the world catastrophically hotter
(2) Human greenhouse warming will be worst at the poles
(3) The Arctic is where global warming will be seen
(4) The climate is changing catastropically because of human activities
(5) Any weather phenomenon will be called "extreme" and blamed on anthropogenic causes.

All of which shows that "science" is never settled because "science" is not a conclusion but a process. The scientific process provides answers to questions and leads to more questions being asked. Heck, in another 70 years or so, we'll start seeing some raw observational data to see whether or not the climate models were correct and see that we environmental sinners are left suffering in a hell of fire and brimstone.

[Reply]I teach engineering and physics to young people

This is interesting. A few months ago, I pulled out my old copy of "A Brief History of Time." I was somewhat shocked at how much in it has been made obsolete. As a physicist, I am sure you unslderstand that we aren't even certain of the fundamental laws of the universe. And that climate models - based on physics - take whatever error we have in our understanding and apply it.

Are physics settled, John? If physics aren't settled, then how can climate science be settled?

As a scientist, are you uncomfortable with others challenging understanding? I thought scientists were always challenging and being challenged. Scientists operate at the edge of human understanding (otherwise they are historians) and EXPECT to be wrong, don't they?

The physics of particles far smaller than an atom are still unsettled, and the physics of things larger than galaxies are unsettled.

The scam is perpetrated by the banks that make the college loans, and the rules that the Congress the banks have bought has made on their behalf.

"Prior to 2010, federal loans were also divided between direct loans (which are originated and funded by the federal government) and guaranteed loans, originated and held by private lenders but guaranteed by the government. The guaranteed lending program was eliminated in 2010 because of a widespread perception that the government guarantees boosted student lending companies' profits but did not benefit students by reducing student loan costs."

Then why do we have, contrary to predictions, record and near-record global sea ice extent over the last couple of years? If the physics are settled, then why are the predictions running so off? And why do the predictions keep changing?

Frankly - I view the stages of climate alarmism as a positive. Just like Billvon's stages of climate denial, there is inherent in them that the alarmist/denialist is paying attention to the actual data and changing the opinions. On the other hand, both sides are now moving towards purely subjective opinions on the results. The deniers on the "climate change will be beneficial" opinion and alarmists saying that "extreme weather" is the hallmark.

The earth had been at a sea ice extreme lately - there's so much of it worldwide that the earth can't seem to warm as much as the real scientists said it would.

Note: the basics of greenhouse warming are like the basics of gravitational acceleration. Dave Scott demonstrated it with a hammer and a feather on the moon. However, calculating the time for a feather to land on earth after being dropped from a height of 1000 feet is a helluva lot more difficult than being dropped 4 feet on the moon. Because there are so many more variables.
