We don't all fit into one of two categories...

I love this... Yesterday I was debating the merits of healthcare in some of the countries I've lived in. The guy I was speaking to (an American) accused me of being a "fucking Republican!" And I had to laugh, because depending on the discussion (or argument), I've either been called a fucking Democrat or a fucking Republican... The simple truth is that I'm neither. Then we had a "discussion" about this (read: argument), where he was telling me I had to pick one - I'm either a red or a blue - sitting on the fence is just lazy... :S:S

That's like saying you're either Catholic or Protestant - you have to pick one - and totally ignoring the fact that there *are* other religions out there, and also agnosticism and atheism...

Are too simple minded to accept that people have differing views on different subjects. Or that they aren't in "lock step" with the entire party line.

Personally, on some things I'm hard-core Right-Wing "Extremist."

Other things, I'm "Flaming Liberal."

Most stuff I'm "middle of the road."

I strongly suspect that is true of most people.

this.

The lazy ones are the ones who fail to inventory their candidates positions and decide on all the issues as opposed to which of the two buckets they are in.

I think it just shows the polarization that has been taking place. This Us vs Them mindset has been growing for quite some time.

Maybe. Or maybe some people are just too ignorant to realise their beliefs/knowledge is limited by their (small) frame of reference. :| Seems pretty obvious, though, doesn't it?

To me, someone who doesn't doubt is someone who doesn't think.

Fact. However, I disagree on doubting being in direct correlation with not thinking. There are several issues that I have no doubt on because I have done research, self educated and have a formed opinion about. There are certainly things that I am skeptic about and I try to read up on before prancing about waving un-informed opinions in peoples faces. I'd like to think others are the same but that is a naive statement at best and unfortunately too many people drink from the kool-aid bowl.

If you want to put a date on it, you might as well call that the end of "The Fairness Doctrine" in 1987. That enabled radio, tv and cable to be completely lopsided in their opinions 24/7/365 with no concept of giving the other side an even break at responding. It's what made Rush Limbaugh and everyone who came after him on both sides possible.

It started slowly and snowballed to what we have today.

To me, forming an opinion based on limited facts and not ever doubting that opinion is synonymous with "not thinking." Of course there are some things you can be reasonably certain about (enough that you don't doubt)... I don't doubt my age, for example... It seems unlikely that there would be a big conspiracy built up around lying to me about this... But not doubting or questioning the things that are complicated and/or uncertain... Well, that just seems silly. And assuming you're right when you have a very small frame of reference... Well, that seems equally silly.

I think this is a good point. I currently see it in your AR15 thread. Whenever someone expounds negatively on the way another person lives and states, this is not the frontier age....it shows to me a small frame of reference or a limited view on life. You have put up a couple thought provokes that even got me out from the history forum.
