ChrisD 0 #1 June 28, 2013 Many of you who watch PBS Stations may have noticed that some of your popular shows are being funded of late by the Koch Conglomerate. The mechanisim for this: They have littereally billions of dollars to use as they see fit. If they fund shows on the subject of the "Whales." or "the History of Science." or any of the other hundered shows that are in the pipeline, PBS is more than happy to take their money. This leaves funding for ecology minded shows at a bit of a disatvantage. Yes they have enough cash to steer and influence PBS by funding shows and thus "diluting" what yo watch. If the schedule is full of shows other than what they don't want yo to see... This is just another form of manipulation,... Slick Hu? C And they get to walk away looking like the good guys???? Just another of my rants on the subject, for your consideration... This particular point is something that hasen't gotten a lot , if any, press... Thanks to Noam C... and Shut Jhally for pointing this one out! Sorry about my spelling, No not really....But what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump." ChrisD 0 #4 June 28, 2013 Dear Mr. "rushmc," I just got off the plane,...I'm a little sleepy and tired, however I would love to discuss, at length your observation. Because at the moment I don't understand it? Peerhaps when I wake up I too can see the world as you do? Sincerley Yours; CBut what do I know, "I only have one tandem jump." NWFlyer 2 #5 June 28, 2013 Everyone's got an agenda. It's up to an informed consumer of media of all sorts to figure out what the agenda is and who's driving it. PBS and other non-commercial media outlets are pretty open about disclosing their funding sources (the dulcet-voiced announcer who says "Major funding for this program provided by [X corporation] and [Y foundation]." It's not all pledge drives and tax dollars, but I don't see it as any great conspiracy. For commercial media, at least those that are owned by publicly-traded corporations, it's also not too hard to figure out who's driving the agenda. Then it's up to you to figure out how much you want to believe."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

This leaves funding for ecology minded shows at a bit of a disatvantage. Seems you can just as easily argue the other way - that the Koch funding frees up donations to the ecology minded shows. People like you don't need to send a dime for the whales or science shows - that's already covered. In reality, PBS funding has always had a corporate/RW bent to it - I've heard your assertion made for a very long time. But in today's world with easily transmitted media, it's not nearly as great a concern as it was back when channels were limited and you needed to wait for the 10 oclock news or the paperboy to come to know what is happening. Then it's up to you to figure out how much you want to believe. I agree with you. However, television viewers are generally far too lazy and apathetic (albeit PBS viewers perhaps somewhat less so) to do such legwork. "Informed consumer" has become an oxymoron these days. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
