I agree. We've all done something in the past we're not proud of. The problem with Paula Dean is that her damage control has sucked. If she'd been more contrite from the get-go, and made it clear that she'd learned from her mistakes (whether or not she even thinks they were mistakes) this whole thing would have gone away. If I were a sponsor of hers, I'd probably back away because she's screwing it up so badly now, not over what she said years ago.

I saw her on a cooking show once. Was disgusted that she wore huge rings while handling food. Those things can get all sorts of nasty junk in them. She should be fired for demonstrating non-sanitary food preparation. At least that's current.

I don't think so BillVon. I can't think of a name I've haven't been called, and it really doesn't affect me anymore. Now on a jumpship the a-hole word is tradition. But that doesn't make it allright. I'm friends with a lot of different departments of law enforcement so that's not a problem either. Generally if a ST, PO or SO calls you that name, there's probably a good reason for it. They don't do that for no reason.

Context matters. You'd say things to a friend you wouldn't say to a stranger, and you'll be more tolerant of friends. The Paula Dean thing was definitely blown out of proportion, but claiming "if two black guys can call each other niggers, Paula Dean can use such racial slurs too" doesn't fly.

And any time you see the word used to ascribe attributes or decriptions to any one of any particular skin shade , yo pretty much know your dealing with a bigot! DNA shows us that the difference betweeen me and my Sir Lankian girl feind (and that last one is not a spelling boo boo.)
