The drawdown diet: Marines steamed by loss of hot meal at Afghanistan base

I'm all for efficient spending and waste reduction, but this is insane. Have they forgotten that morale starts in the mess tent? That an army marches on its stomach? All the other cliches covering how important food is to somebody giving up everything else?

Seriously, do you think the embassy, CIA types, or super duper special guys at Camp Integrity are missing meals?

Also, spotted an article somewhere the other day stating that Medevac is also being reduced. Therefore, battlefield mortality could increase.

From the article:
Quote

The tactical reason for the cooking scale-down is that the people who are assigned to “support services” — such as food workers — “need to go home before the people who provide the security which enables those services,” Gilmore wrote. “This is a natural outcome of the drawdown process unrelated to sequestration or the ongoing budget issues back in the States.”

So, this doesn't seem to be a matter of saving money. Who should be the last ones left to turn out the lights, actual marines who can defend themselves against insurgent attacks, or the cooks?

When that day arrives, the fly guys will be very busy, and every Marine is qualified to shoot; including the cooks.

Besides, Marines are supposed to be tough, not whiners.

They are, but I hope somebody puts a lid on John McCain, or they may be headed to Syria.+1

OMG, I agreed with rickjump1 on something!

But the Marines weren't the ones doing the cooking. The cooks that got pulled were the civilian food contractors.

Nope, let's hope the cooks hand out MREs and hit the road long before the shit hits the fan. A lot of the civilian contract hands in Vietnam managed to "acquire" weapons for their own protection. I hope these guys aren't screwed by the political correctness police.

If the camp were closing within weeks, I'd say that explanation works. But since Leatherneck/Bastion/Tombstone isn't going anywhere anytime soon, I don't see the value in feeding troops trench-quality slop. It's bad enough to eat it at remote outposts. Serving it at one of the main bases in the country is not reasonable, long term. The good news for folks stationed there is that they can still get people food other times of day. Relying on only MREs for sustenance is a very unpleasant endeavor. MREs are not your friend unless starvation is the only other option.
