So much for the religion of peace!

>A religion can be neither violent nor peaceful. Those qualities can only be possessed by a person.

That's like saying that Pakistan is not violent or peaceful; those qualities can only be possessed by its people/soldiers.

Any person of any religion can be violent or peaceful. However, when religious leaders advocate violence and enable its usage, then the religion itself is violent. Examples would include the Catholic Church in the 1100's and the Taliban mullahs of the 2000's. (Fortunately, nowadays that is very rare.)

"exertion of physical force so as to injure or abuse (as in warfare effecting illegal entry into a house)"

How does an inanimate abstract object exert physical force?

(also note: a Taliban mullah is a person)

People can be violent. Organized groups of people can be violent. When such an organization has as part of its charter to cause such violence (and is not a coincidence due to violent people being members) then the organization itself is violent. It would be incorrect, for example, to claim that the IRA or Al Qaeda were not violent organizations.

Whew, Baptists aren't listed.

Well, they got most of their whippings, kidnappings, lynchings and church-bombings out of their system by the end of the 1960s.

Now they just cluck at you and share a bunch of feel-good worthless shit on facebook to make themselves feel religious.

Go into a bar in the South.
Tell people you're inviting them outside to watch you burn a flag.

In Austin they'd probably light the flag for you and sing some Atheist songs...

Austin is only geographically located in "the South." ;)

Entire point being however, that "religion" generally becomes "violent" once somebody's panties get into a wad and I believe it has far more to do with "us versus them" than the actual beliefs.

"Us versus them" can be anything; Red versus Blue, North versus South, East versus West, Left versus Right.

You want peace? Stop making everything "us versus them."

nicely stated, applies to a lot more than just religion

Reminds me of a line in a book once, something to the effect of "first contact from an alien species would do wonders for racial harmony on earth - black and white will swiftly settle their differences so they can all gang up on green." :D
You are playing chicken with a planet - you can't dodge and planets don't blink. Act accordingly.
