wmw999 2,588 #52 April 23, 2013 Even though he's a lawyer (and therefore paid for describing "the line"), I think I agree with Jerry, that somewhere there's a line, and that it was crossed. I'm not sure that's a line that I want too tightly delineated, because the more concretely we do that, the less leeway we give police and other emergency responders in determing what to do in other emergent situations -- e.g., when there really is a kidnapper, the homeowner mouths "help me" while saying that everything is OK, or any other weird and unlikely scenario. Frankly, I want them to have that discretion -- I just want it used in a single-incident way, rather than to close down an entire neighborhood. Individuals should have the ability to go above and beyond, and get called on it when they screwed up. If it's a mass effort, then it becomes too difficult to judge the specifics of the case, and it's more likely to be deemed OK kind of generally -- and that's where precedents are born. Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. It's a perception thing. I said my perception. And said "I don't know." My legal issue is with the door-to-door searches. My philosophical problem is the massive showing of police force.
