wayneflorida 0 #2 April 3, 2013 I bet the Mayor's street gets patrolled. Also, business hire extra cops, city reduces regular cops. Zero net gain.

rhaig 0 #5 April 3, 2013 QuoteAnd this is different from every other city in America (and probably the world) how? Wendy P. this differs from organizations hiring off duty police for extra security because the hired police aren't being hired for an event or security. They are being hired to be beat-cops. Part of me has no problem with this. Hiring off-duty cops for extra security is the way it is everywhere. With this proposal, however, the businesses and organizations doing the hiring aren't controlling the hired off-duty officers the way they would for event security. This is paying the officers to report to the city chain of command and work a specific beat. It just doesn't seem right to me. Kind of like "sure, you can have extra cops on your street mister. Fork over $30/hr for each cop. No, you're not hiring them, we still control them, you're just paying for them." but at the same time "What? you can't afford to pay for extra cops and you have a crime problem on your street? Too bad so sad... we're doing all we can."-- Rob
wmw999 2,602 #6 April 3, 2013 In Houston, the streets in the richer neighborhoods are all swept, and the potholes filled. That's not the same in the poorer neighborhoods. Money talks. Sometimes, it talks out loud, sometimes more subtly. Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it.
