>Oh and my grandparents were married in Mississippi in 1957 and my mom even
>though she's as blonde as I am would be considered"black" according to some.

And you really would have preferred the government telling your grandparents "no, you can't get married, that is offensive?"

I don't think my grandparents asked for permission:P
What I find offensive is when you say that the "gay rights" movement if you want to call it that is the same as the Civil rights movement. Sorry, but its not at all

The clock is ticking on opinions like yours.

Come back in 10 or 20 years and you'll think differently. I pretty much guarantee it.

Are you sure it's "1957"? How about 1907? Would fit much better, I guess. :|

Do you notice a trend?

I'm sorry but you could probably find a poll that shows a trend in people believing that the moon is made of cheese. Polls are manipulated to show what you want them to.

Some time back I read an interesting opinion piece somewhere that was proposing the theory that the sitcom "Will and Grace"(1998–2006) had helped shift the attitudes of the American public by putting a human face on gay people.

A healthy level scepticism is a good thing. However, just because you choose to get your information from people with an extreme pre-declared bias it does not automatically follow that every other source of information has an equal degree of bias.

Oh, they did; I am sure they got a marriage license. Now imagine if the clerk said "sorry, we don't allow your kind to get one of these."

Gay rights are civil rights. By definition.

Some day in the future, you will find yourself in the awkward position of having to explain to your wide-eyed grandchildren, that back in the beginning of the century, you opposed Gay marriage.

And I wonder what the reaction to their romance would have been if, instead of blonde hair, your grandmother had inherited darker skin and nappy hair?

It sounds like your grandparents violated at least two Mississippi laws: the one requiring them to truthfully represent their race on their marriage license application, and the anti-miscegentation law itself. That could easily have gotten them prosecuted and jailed under Mississippi law as it existed then. They had guts, I'll grant you that.

Why not?

The ability of a minority to have the same opportunities as the rest of the majority is the basis of all civil rights movements.

Just because you think that being gay is a choice and you think it is an immoral behavior doesn't give you the right to deny other people opportunities.

And what if it really is a choice. Most behavioral science has shown that it isn't, but what if it is?

What gives you the power to decide that someone else's choice is wrong?
As long as both parties are consenting adults, and no one is being hurt, who gave you the power to control their life?
Who made you the arbitrer of their rights?

That desire to control other people and the apparent belief that it's ok to do so is rather offensive to me.

My mom is a blonde. My Grandmother had dark very curly hair and her skin was also dark, not as dark as my mom's older brother but yes she was dark and was considered "black". Out of 7 siblings she and her youngest sister were the only ones that were that dark, and as with almost every one that "looks" different in a family outsider asked if they were adopted.

They represented their race as human. No misrepresentation there. I will say this, this thread and others have really brought this up for discussion in my family and extended family. I must say, they are far from perfect and some are crazy, and yes some don't talk to others and they fight and drink and a few took drugs, and I think more then one has been to jail, they also gossip with the best of them. Yes some of us are conservative and some are liberals and holy crap we even have democrats, we have baptists, catholic lutheran and ugh even a scientologist and a agnostic, but they're all pretty amazing and its has been great going over family history again and hearing old stories. Thanks for the threads!

It won't be an awkward position at all, I fully intend to raise my children with the same values and beliefs I was raised with and hopefully they will do the same.

It comes down to the power and right to vote the way I believe and chose to just the same as you do,isn't that how our laws come about? You have a right to be offended I'm not saying you don't and I have a right to be offended.

No. That isn't how our government works. We aren't a democracy. We are a republic.

And the constitution was specifically written to prevent the majority from running roughshod over the minorities. It hasn't always worked out that way, but that's what's supposed to happen.

Again, who told you it was ok to deny other people the same rights that you have?

You seem to be hung up on a complete lack of racial identification (human isn't a race, it's a species). And I really, really doubt that your GPs told the Mississippi clerk of courts that their race was "human." You already stated that your brother (?) had to go well up the chain of command at college to put that on his application. I don't think that a county official would have done anything but deny the application if it wasn't filled out correctly.

I'm sorry if I implied that it was a college, it wasn't it was a middle school he's in the 8th grade. Yes, they did put human. Also, not everyone that lived in Mississippi at the time was a racist and not every clerk was a racist. I can only go by my family history. Believe me there is also enough CRAP that we've had to deal with as a family, I hope I'm not implying that there hasn't been.
