On March 5, gun control proponent Mark Kelly bought an "assault rifle" and a semi-automatic handgun at Diamondback Police Supply, Tucson, AZ.

Recommended Posts

On March 6, he attended a Tucson rally with his wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, to "call for tougher gun-control laws."

The rally was held at the plaza where Jared Loughner shot Giffords in January, 2011.

In covering the rally, the Los Angeles Times reported that out of all the gun control supporters, "Kelly and Giffords have emerged as top voices in the call for stricter regulations."

Speaking at the rally, Kelly said that his wife inspires him every day. And that often, "as she heads off to therapy, the last thing she'll" do is remind Kelly to "fight, fight, fight" for more gun control.

Three days after purchasing his AR-15, Kelly put up a Facebook post saying he was going to hand the gun over to the Tucson PD. He has not said whether he will also be handing over the semi-automatic .45 caliber pistol he bought on March 5 as well. Perhaps he will keep the pistol for trips to the gun range in between gun control rallies?

Appearing on CNN's The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer on March 11, Mark Kelly said he planned from the start to hand over an AR-15 rifle he purchased to the Tuscon Police Department.

Blitzer then quoted a section from the March 9 Breitbart News story on Kelly's purchase, and asked Kelly to respond.

Here's what Blitzer read:

Breitbart News then began investigating the details surrounding the purchase, including visiting the gun store. Suddenly, Kelly announced on his Facebook page that he was not going to keep the AR-15, which he has yet to pick up from the store.

Kelly responded that he went into the gun store with a plan to buy a .45, "and if we had the opportunity, to buy the AR-15 as well." He said he didn't "know the timing," but he and his people "had a plan for when [they] were going to announce it on Facebook."

Attention to this issue has been intense, because Kelly bought the AR-15 on March 5 but did not announce that he was turning it over to Tucson PD until three days later.

During the interview, Kelly criticized the AR-15 as a "deadly" weapon "designed for the military" – one which people can buy too easily. But it is unclear what it proves if Kelly, a man with an apparently immaculate record, does not trigger any red flags in a gun purchase background check.

As it now stands, his purchase an AR-15 is simply another purchase of a great rifle by a law-abiding citizen. And that process will get harder and harder to complete if Kelly gets his way with gun control.

When Blitzer asked Kelly if he was turning in the .45 as well, Kelly said: "That one I'll keep."

He sounds a little mentally unstable. That's very understandable considering what he and his wife have had to go through. However, I do think that he should no be allowed to purchase a gun given his current mental state unless he undergo's a psychological exam. He could turn into a nutter.

Considering the implending ban on AR15's I'm not surprised the whole of the US is not out buying them. Once everyone has one who wants one, it won't matter about any ban as any ban will effect new gun sales. Some are getting rid of AR15 due to proposed licensing, taxing, training legislation which may make owning an AR15 not worth the expense or hassle.

What would be the point of going out to spend hundreds of dollars on an AR platform rifle and then giving it away a few days later when the media caught wind?

I say he just came out with the facebook post after word got out he was being two faced in his new legislation push.

Gabby Giffords suffered a traumatic brain injury. Indeed, I suspect there are Axis I or Axis II diagnoses from which she suffers. That Mark Kelly would purchase weapons and keep them in places where a person of known decreased mental capacity is living is shocking.

Note: yes, I know. Gabby Giffords did not ask for her brain to be in the condition that it is. Neither did 95% of everybody else who is suffering from a mental illness. Let’s start getting consistent here.

He (Mark Kelly) had to sign form 4473, with penalties for perjury, stating it was for personal use. Now says he bought it to be a gift? (To a police department) He is admitting to a straw man purchase. Plain and simple. He lied on the federal form. Wasn't this straw man issue in the news in the last couple of days before about a federal law, or a bill, prohibiting straw man purchases? With huge penalties?

If it is all right to buy a gun and then give it away, and not have it considered to be a straw man purchase, then that is a pretty weak exception and can be used regularly as a complete defense in cases appearing to be straw man purchases.

It is apparent that he bought it and then got caught and is making up this baloney story about using the purchase to test background checks. Oh, and by the way he purchased three 30 round magazines at the same time. Really? Need to buy three magazines to test some background test theory? At appx the same time, testified in Denver, Colorado in a legislative hearing about the need to make illegal, the sales of 30 round magazines?? Nah. He bought it and got caught.

Why is that? he represents exactly what the control freaks want.

They want to restrict the rights and choices and thoughts of OTHER people. it doesn't apply to them personally.

I think he's the poster child.'

Probably drinks 33 oz sodas too.

We are!!!

Have you not seen the prices skyrocketing????

Some of us at work are pooling money to buy the parts to build our own for that matter.

Some sweet pieces out there on constant backorder, production is currently in very high gear.

I guess the dealer felt Kelly wasn't ready to downsize. ;)

Here you are trying to be funny and you don't make sense. See how easy this is...
