Can the President order an American killed on US soil with a drone?

Recommended Posts

>Um, actually the current admin, including POTUS and AG Holder do support
>targeted killings of folks on a secret list . . .

Not within the US, which is what the original letter, the filibuster, the later letter and Rand's latest reversal were about.

>Holder said no, but trust him as far as you like. Rand, however, only said he
>supported drones being able to do what LEOs can do.

Right. So:

Holder - Drones cannot be used to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil.

Rand - Drones can be used to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil.

This gets back to the original question of the thread. Do you agree with Holder or Rand on this?

Honestly I'm not a fan of the idea of anyone in the US, including all levels of LEOs, having armed drones. It's up there with armed aircraft. Limit it to the military. If things are so bad that our military is fighting on US soil, then them using drones is not a stretch. The case could be made either way for all other non-DOJ feds (read CIA et al), but that is really scary.

Sort of agreed. I am OK with the military having drones, and having the ability to take action within the US to stop a 9/11-type attack. Lower levels of law enforcement using armed drones? No.

What will be more and more of an issue in coming years is the issue of drones as surveillance tools. They have already started using them for border security, and the jump from that to using them to hunt down drug lords and terrorist sleeper cells within the US is a small one. That will be followed by using them to catch ordinary drug dealers, and soon cops will see no reason not to use them for just about anything.

Absolutely. That why we need to have the conversation about drone use now, rather than waiting for the problems to come and trying to address it afterwards.

This is hilarious. A thousand cops and 200 rounds could not kill a young terrorist in Watertown that now we need thousands of drones flying around to strike at terrorists possible killing innocent bystanders.

Sounds like the drone industry is lobbying pretty hard for more drones. In fact, they've announced every branch of the military wants drones.... They'll end up using drones to catch speeders!

They didn't have to kill him. They caught him, with the help of the public.

Where have you been? They already do; they just don't fly. What do you think speed cameras and red light cameras are, if not drones?

Good thing we have Holder in charge, then. (If we can stop Rand Paul's "cop drones," that is.)
