CNN '7 Spending Cuts You'll Really Feel'

Recommended Posts

Quote

...if they happen, these seven cuts will be really felt by many Americans. Bold is mine.

1. Shrinking unemployment benefits. Some 3.8 million Americans estimated to collect unemployment checks between March and September will feel the pain the most. That's because unemployment benefit checks are being pared by 9.4%. On average, it would mean a cut of $400 over that period.

Damn. Unemployment to be cut $12/week

2. Beef and chicken to cost more and even face a shortage. A $51 million dollar cut to food safety programs means food inspectors will be furloughed and lead to closures of meat and poultry plants for up to 15 days. Americans will have to pay more and deal with shortages of chicken, eggs, pork and beef, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "Food safety could be compromised," he said in a letter. There will have less food available -- by as much as 2 billion pounds of meat, 3 billion pounds of chicken, 200 million pounds of eggs.

More fear mongering. The Ag secretary thinks food safety isn't already compromised?

3. Granny won't get her lunch. More than 4 million home-bound and disabled seniors may have to go without supper this year because of cuts to Meals on Wheels programs. Just in Erie County, New York, it could mean 36,000 fewer meals will be delivered, according to the Meals On Wheels Association of America.

What defines 'supper'. In alot of areas supper is actually lunch, but supper sounds so much better.

4. Your preschooler could be stuck at home. Some 70,000 children from lower income families will not be able to enroll for pre-schools and daycare centers run by Head Start programs this fall, thanks to at least $400 million in cuts.

No government baby sitting program?

5. National parks will close campgrounds or open late. The National Park Service will lose $110 million from its annual budget. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee plans to close five campgrounds and picnic areas affecting over 54,000 visitors. Two of the main thoroughfares into the Grand Canyon will remain closed until later this year, including the popular West Rim Drive, known for its breathtaking beauty. The delays will affect about 250,000 visitors.

Damn. No camping.

6. Longer lines at the airport. Domestic travelers can add an extra hour to airport security lines, while international travelers may have to wait four hours to clear customs. That's because federal agencies that handle airport security and customs are warning that worker furloughs will increase the time it takes to check passengers.

Hmmm. Federal agencies warning us? One has to wonder if they have an ulterior motive.

7. Roofs blown off by Hurricane Sandy won't get repaired. About $3 billion has been cut from a supplemental bill for Hurricane Sandy victims. The cut includes "crucial funding" for repair and recovery of some 10,000 homes and small businesses, said HUD Secretary Shaun Donavan last week.

A shame...really.

So I guess most CNN viewers are homebound seniors on unemployment who have pre-school aged kids who like to fly to campsites where they roast beef or chicken over a campfire while waiting for their homes to be repaired. :S

So it'll be up to the state regulators to destroy meat deemed unfit for human consumption?

That's out of between $125 and $130. That's very noticeable, and will add a bunch of homeless. Being homeless makes it a whole lot harder to find a job.

Food safety is quite good -- we have cheap plentiful food. And without monitoring, lots of factory farms will increase profits, counting on lesser surveillance and luck.

Granny won't get her supper

I'm not sure what you're driving at here -- whether you eat the big meal in the mid-day or evening, sounds like one will be lesser or gone. That might be OK -- Meals on Wheels actually does a pretty good job, and impoverished elders are normally pretty sympathetic. Of course, they're more sympathetic if they live in nicely manicured suburbs. Sucks to be poor.

Head Start...No government baby sitting program?

It's not a gummint baby sitting program. Might not be as effective as some people think, but it's more than babysitting. Let's just consign people with shitty parents to the crapper right from the start. Maybe set up an island and just deport them.

Damn. No camping.

Legitimate cutback. It'll hurt lots of people (like me), but it's more optional than some other things. Of course, it'll reduce tourism, which will reduce dollars being spent by people. But who cares about that?

Nah, there'll be longer lines. Another thing that really might be necessary.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic. If so, yeah, I agree that uninsured losses suck, and yeah, sometimes insurance isn't affordable. If not, WTF? Are you really saying that the gummint should pick up insurance for folks who didn't have it?

So -

Predictions of badness as a result of the sequester are lies

All the bad things that happen from the sequester will be Obama's fault

Do I have that right?

Why not....sounds good to me. ;) Seriously Bill, do you think the rabid appetite media outlets have for this kind of news is a good thing? The original intent of my post was to point out how ridiculous CNN was in looking for something to report on.

Huh?

I stated earlier that the sequester was Obamas idea

I also stated that I think it is a good idea

So if it happens Obama gets the credit in my book

But now, Obama does not like it so he is trying to stop it by blaming the other side with lies and scare tactics

If Obama gets it stopped, then I will blame him

Hows that?

I think it's the media's audience that has the rabid appetite for that sort of news. "CBO analysis of sequestration cuts" doesn't sell ad time; "Budget cuts that hurt your family" does.

Good example:

==============================
Illegals released in Arizona because of sequester
FOX News

Arizona is already feeling the effects of sequestration as ICE releases hundreds of illegal immigrations, with possibly thousands more to come

Playing politics at the expense of safety . . . Sheriff Paul Babieu calls the release dangerous and unacceptable.

Sequester Fears Take Mainstream Media Hysteria to New Heights

Sequester fears take mainstream media hysteria to new heights
By Dan Gainor

R.E.M. sang, “It’s the end of the world as we know it.” If ever there were a theme song for the liberal media’s coverage of the sequester the band's iconic song would be it.

The “broad and sweeping federal budget cuts” being debated on the Hill are being reported breathlessly in the news media. NBC’s Brian Williams called it “high anxiety” and a “Good Morning America” graphic sounded the alarm: “Seven Days to Fiscal Emergency.” ABC’s David Kerley said the sequester “sounds like a disaster movie.” He didn’t scream, but he still has time.

It will be up to state regulators to ensure that tainted meat is sent to _other_ states.

Meat processors all over the nation have been stockpiling tainted meat to unleash on the unsuspecting public, as soon as the “sequester” is implemented. The only thing between us and an anarchistic hellscape is government regulation. If you take your car to get its oil changed. the attendants will probably put sand in you crankcase and sugar in your gas tank, because there is not a regulator looking over their shoulder.

Between that and the mass release of dangerous hardened criminals into your neighborhood, you'll have utter chaos.
