quade 4 #101 February 13, 2013 Quote Quote LAPD and news work together quite a bit to coordinate what is and isn't cool to show at any given moment. Yes, the Police have to ask and technically the news doesn't have to oblige, but when asked they do. News choppers in LA are a situation unlike anywhere else in the country. Procedures for everything. Actually quite nice most of the time even if it seems odd to those not familiar with the drill. I think it's insane that the LAPD has to even ask. Because you don't understand the situation and relationship they have. Everyone wants cooperation rather than being hard asses. Remember, the press does NOT have to obey. By asking rather than demanding, it fosters cooperation. Likewise, the press doesn't really want to get anybody killed either, so they have asked the PIO to notify them when they're potentially compromising a situation. It's more a matter of keeping each other informed yet realizing everybody has a job to do. It's not an animosity the thing at all. BTW, is that legally insane? quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Two were shot, one fatally. As far as I know, Dorner's body count stands at 4 dead including 2 cops, and 3 other cops wounded."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
BillyVance 35 #104 February 13, 2013 Apparently, the LAPD has called a news conference at 9 PM PST. I'm going to assume this is the big one detailing how the shit went down today."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban

BillyVance 35 #106 February 13, 2013 Apparently the news is out that they have pulled Dorner's body out of the burning cabin. They sent a vehicle in to tear the walls off the cabin one at a time. When they got to the last wall, they heard one gunshot, and shortly after, flames spread throughout the cabin. I'm going to guess he set the cabin on fire and then shot himself to death. Good riddance. rhaig 0 #108 February 13, 2013 no man... that's just what he wants you to think. He really dragged LL Cool J in there and escaped through a tunnel. The gunshot was him killing LL Cool J, and then the collapsed the tunnel behind him. meanwhile he's long gone man... yeah... that's the ticket.-- Rob

I was listening to San Bernardino County Sheriff scanner feeds as it happened (SBCS System 7/8 here: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?action=cwp&ctid=218). They torched the house. The cops (according to KTLA) had the live video KTLA chopper zoom out as the place burned. A cop mentioned that the cabin (more of a house) had a basement, and to let it burn. I don't know if it was justified or not, but that's what I heard the cops saying. champu 1 #111 February 13, 2013 QuoteWhat I have disdain for is the concept that only one group of people can define or redefine terms that have existing meanings. This becomes especially troubling in cases such as "enhanced interrogation" or "targeted killing." When you give one group, in this case lawyers, the exclusive right to redefine the language, who knows what kind of shit they will invent to reframe your rights? This was precisely the issue Orwell was talking about when he invented Newspeak. Language absolutely has to remain the construct of the common man. It can not be allowed to be redefined exclusively by "the system." I don't disagree that manipulation of language in an effort to control how people think and talk about things is generally bad, but I think you're confused as to who to blame, and I think you're want to be inconsistent on the issue. As an illustrative example, how do you feel about the proposed ban on what the president last night called "massive ammunition magazines"?
Andy9o8 2 #112 February 13, 2013 Quote how do you feel about the proposed ban on what the president last night called "massive ammunition magazines"? Magazine-size issue aside, I'm surprised that such clumsy (and obviously vulnerable-to-rebuttal) language survived the incredibly intense vetting and re-re-re-writing process that results in the final version of any and every modern SOTU speech. ryoder 1,590 #114 March 12, 2013 Quote~20 years ago there was an incident in Denver where an armed suspect was on the run, and the cops were in pursuit. There were *no* law enforcement a/c in the air, but there was a news helicopter. As the helicopter watched, he saw what the cops didn't: The suspect changed vehicles, commandeering a truck and it's driver, then drove past the cops w/o the cops realizing it. The pilot was watching the suspect get away as he finally got a radio message through to the cops, so he resorted to getting involved himself: He dropped down into a hover in the path of the oncoming suspect, stopping the truck and giving the cops a chance to catch up. A friend just sent me this link to the news video of this story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XOfroMl_JI"There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones.
