OHCHUTE 0 #1 January 17, 2013 Ordinance No. 9 "To Provide against Carrying of Deadly Weapons" (effective April 19, 1881). Section 1: "It is hereby declared to be unlawful for any person to carry deadly weapons, concealed or otherwise [except the same be carried openly in sight, and in the hand] within the limits of the City of Tombstone. Section 2: This prohibition does not extend to persons immediately leaving or entering the city, who, with good faith, and within reasonable time are proceeding to deposit, or take from the place of deposit such deadly weapon. Section 3: All fire-arms of every description, and bowie knives and dirks, are included within the prohibition of this ordinance." After the gunfight on October 26, 1881 in which three Cowboys died, the Earps and Holliday had to defend themselves against murder charges. The ordinances were cited in the preliminary hearing held by Justice Wells Spicer.[21] In his ruling exonerating the lawmen of murder, he described Frank McLaury's insistence that he would not give up his weapons unless the marshal and his deputies also gave up their arms as a "proposition both monstrous and startling!"[22] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cowboys_(Cochise_County)
rehmwa 2 #2 January 17, 2013 City laws.....it's a different animal Much different than the Feds getting into something best handled at a more local level. Much better than the Feds, doing an end run around the 2nd, and the right to own property privately - and best handled more locally ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
masterrig 1 #3 January 17, 2013 The gun ban was introduced and enforced by the Earps. Wyatt and his brothers, Morgan and Virgil, wanted control of the gambling and prostitution. McLaury wanted in on the action but not with the Earps. After the O.K. Corral incident, it all became personal between Wyatt and the McLaury's. The fued continued till Wyatt gave-up and went to Hollywood. Basically, it was a 'gang thing'. The law enforcement controlled by the Earps vs the McLaurys. Once the Earps were gone, things settled-down. In this case, who were the 'good guys'? Chuck
