Time to ban hammers and clubs

FBI: MORE PEOPLE KILLED WITH HAMMERS, CLUBS EACH YEAR THAN RIFLES

By AWR HAWKINS, Breitbart.com

According to the FBI annual crime statistics, the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle.

This is an interesting fact, particularly amid the Democrats' feverish push to ban many different rifles, ostensibly to keep us safe of course.

However, it appears the zeal of Sens. like Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) is misdirected. For in looking at the FBI numbers from 2005 to 2011, the number of murders by hammers and clubs consistently exceeds the number of murders committed with a rifle.

Think about it: In 2005, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 445, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 605. In 2006, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 438, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 618.
And so the list goes, with the actual numbers changing somewhat from year to year, yet the fact that more people are killed with blunt objects each year remains constant.

For example, in 2011, there was 323 murders committed with a rifle but 496 murders committed with hammers and clubs.

While the FBI makes is clear that some of the "murder by rifle" numbers could be adjusted up slightly, when you take into account murders with non-categorized types of guns, it does not change the fact that their annual reports consistently show more lives are taken each year with these blunt objects than are taken with Feinstein's dreaded rifle.

Another interesting fact: According to the FBI, nearly twice as many people are killed by hands and fists each year than are killed by murderers who use rifles.

Feinstein has a dreaded rifle? Is that sort of like a killer rabbit?

What, no "ban spoons?" That's usually a favorite.

Have spoons been used to kill more people than rifles or hammers or clubs?

We are talking second person usage of course:)

Here is a link to the actual data.

Yes, there are more people killed by hand or fist than by rifle. If you combine rifles with shotguns, then it varies by year which is more.

Of course, handguns kill over 8 times as many people as hand/fist or hammers, and over 10 times as many people as clubs and/or hammers. I'm not even in favor of banning weapons, but it's BS to cherry-pick the data like that.

I'm sure more people are killed by knives than by automatic weapons, too.

We are not talking hand guns

We are talking about rifles that are semi auto

Perspective is everything

If banning rifles is needed then hammers and clubs need to go first

And it is not cherry picking when looked at in the context of the pissing contest going on about semi auto rifles by linking them to the murders in the school

THEY COULD BE! Therefore clubs, hammers, spoons and rifles are exactly the same.

Oh they "could" be

Now that is different

What a cunundrum

How is it different? If they can be used as weapons they're all exactly the same.

It is really hard to get context across on internet sites like this[:/]

Just thinking out loud here, but is there a method to determine how many of these murders were gang related? Also if an individual uses a handgun to protect themselves during a robbery attempt and kills to bad guy...are those killing part of the total number referenced in the data?

>Perhaps we should add axes to the clubs and knives argument while were at it.

And spoons. And cars; they kill people.

So now we have cars, spoons, axes, knives, clubs and rifles as things that are exactly the same.

I remember a time when borrowed rigs could be on the list too.

So, if this is the way you really think
Why should rifles (of any type) be singled out to be banned?

In your opinion of course

Indeed. 323 murders committed with rifles, 1,587 with Firearms - Type Not Stated.

Ban miscellaneous guns!
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

His point was similar to one I tried to make here, which is that if one is to focus on particular features or classification of weapon with legislation, then crime statistics presented need to be similarly focused. I think one of the strongest "olive branch" maneuvers that people in favor of additional regulation of firearms could make would be to acknowledge how ill-informed much of the 1994 AWB was with respect to what kinds of weapons were actually used in crimes.

Sort of off-topic... I saw an article last week that I thought was interesting in the context of the gun debate. Here we have two cases of [likely] mentally ill people killing a person in a graphic and violent way that hits close to home for a lot of people, and the government response is that it needs to be kept in perspective. I think that's all that's being asked by folks who are trying to defend rifles.

There are hundreds of billions of weapons on the planet most for free taking, including stones, sticks, broken bottles, water if you consider drowning someone. The problem is: there are simply too many people on the planet in too little space. They've already done study on rats in confined spaces. They eat each other, turn gay (sorry), become disenfranched mentally and experience psycotic eposodes. Our food supply is infected with all types of harmful additives etc. I don't have any solution but if there's anything that might be banned it is sperm, or perhaps eggs for a brief interlude to allow the planet to catch its breath. No the planet will not support 100 billion people.

They shouldn't be treated any differently than anything else that can kill you! Spoons, nuclear weapons, rifles, airplanes, cheerios - all exactly the same. No regulation should ever treat them any differently.

And yes, while I'm talking olive branches, it would go a long way if firearm rights advocates would acknowledge that guns are purpose-built as weapons. They are designed to break inanimate objects and turn animate objects into inanimate objects. I love sport shooting as much as the next guy, but there's a reason we call clay targets "birds" and why many paper targets look the way they do.

And, as GeorgiaDon suggested, even amongst purpose-built weapons there are aspects of motivation unique to firearms that deserve consideration.

So while comparing stats can be useful to help bring perspective to the argument, I don't think it's helpful to mock gun control advocates by suggesting they should "ban x" just because "x" causes more deaths than a particular type of firearm.
