How does the UK manage to have a much lower homicide rate than the USA?

I also think that a lot of it does have to do with culture.

Just out of curiosity, did gangster rap, the prison culture, and gang-banging ever go mainstream over there across the pond like it did here in the U.S.?

Also, does London have any neighbor 3rd world countries that ship drugs in like Mexico? (I mean, comparatively speaking, is Ireland that bad?)

And how is Englands Immigration policy compared to the U.S.? Do you guys have to "Press 2 for (Insert language here)" on the telephone to accommodate anyone else yet?

I'm thinking comparing London to Chicago is like comparing apples to oranges....

gangsta Rap: Yes

Prison culture: To some extent mainly in the black community but not exclusively, but having said that we obviously have nothing like the amount of prisons that exisit in the US.

There is a big problem with gang culture in the Uk, more stabbings than shootings but there are plenty of those too. drive bys and random shootings are not unusual in some city areas these include the shooting of children often who got in the way but not always unintentional. Gangs in London often lead to post (Zip) code wars and youths are stabbed to death or shot simply for being outside of their area.

Even though you're taking the piss yes Ireland is a real route for drug imports. Also Chicago is as far away from Mexico as London is from North Africa, but drugs from around the world come into London via Heathrow and by ship the distance to the nearest third world country is irrelevant. UK Cities are awash with drugs.

Immigration is out of control, the Government have no idea how many illegal immigrants are in the country (by their own admission). In London before Christmas it was announced that white English are a minority in London and make up around only 30% of the population.

Ireland alone has a massive drugs problem and trafficking is massive business from there:

Narcotics trafficking into the UK is huge:

... I do think that murders in Chicago are a cultural issue. A subcultural issue, even. Unfortunately, it’s tough to get rid of it.

......................................................................................

It is a socio-economic problem. Lower classes tend to be the most violent.
Recent immigrants: latinos, africans (Somali, Sudanese, Rwandan, etc. refugees from recent wars), asians, etc. tend to be more recent immigrants and their darker skin makes them more visible.
Immigrants may initially engage in crime - to get a leg up - but tend to send second and third generations to decent schools, invest in honest businesses, etc.
At least that is the "American dream" and it works for latinos on the West Coast.

Why the afro-american descendants of (centuries ago) slaves have not moved up into the middle class is a mystery that has baffled Americans since JFK and MLK???????

... It's a lot harder to smuggle something into a country than across a city boundary. Not impossible, but some chance of being caught instead of zero chance of being caught.

The majority of guns - used in drug gang related shootings in Canada and Mexico - were smuggled in from the USA.

Then that "small time dope dealer" is either full of shit, or the guns aren't coming from legally bought sources in the US. There's no legal source in the US for rocket launchers or machine guns. (there is a way to get full auto in the US, but those guns are very highly regulated and very, very valuable)

I don't know about Canada, but the "majority of the guns used in drug gang related shootings in Mexico" don't come from the US, they come from the Mexican army.

Many have, and are. Why is it taking many of them longer? In part, it's because, well, it's fairly easy to pick them out in a crowd.

No, that's not the only factor, but if you think MLK and his cohorts eliminated that as a major factor, you're kidding yourself. No card-playing here; just social analysis.

I agree, its not JUST the fact that you have substantially lower amounts of guns.

But its PARTLY due to that.

I think it will be a lot easier to take the number of guns down, than it will be to change the underlying culture of the USA as a first step in reducing homicides to a level closer resembling the UK.

How about the UN troops disarming all of the civilians in the USA to ensure that ALL the guns have been collected? Whatdaya think? :P

I think that would be known as the "Tea Party Wet Dream Scenario."

Home-grown "militia" units square off against the evil empire known as the UN. The UN, of course, would be decimated in any attempt to perform any action on US soil (true) without the full support of US troops, so . . . the "militias" win. Walter Mitty finally gets to play out his fantasy AND win? Yeah, wet dream.

Delusional to believe it could even be contemplated let alone happen. Hence the name.

Make no mistake, the "militias" actually would win. I'm not being facetious there. They really would. It would simply not happen. It would be about as likely as New Zealand invading Texas.

The US is obsessed with defending themselves and as such come across as scared and insecure.

It's been ages since I've been in SC - whats happened to JR - not a single post in this gun thread from him?:o

I can't figure out if pops is for or against gun control - but then most people would take one look at him and runaway:P

What's delusional is to think the UN is not capable of attempting to impose a world wide ban on guns.
