wolfriverjoe 1,523 #4 December 29, 2012 QuoteFarm subsidies are a pernicious form of corporate welfare. Better to let them all expire. The milk issue isn't a subsidy, it's a minimum price support system. And if the bill expires, the "old rules" (from 1949) will apply. And that will cause prices to rise. Unless the SecAg intervenes, like the rules allow. It's not going to cause major problems, but it's a significant symptom of how stupid Congress (both houses, both parties) has become. http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/if-congress-doesnt-avoid-dairy-cliff-milk-prices-could-double/2012/12/27/11908108-505f-11e2-8b49-64675006147f_story.html"There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." So you support farm subsidies Good to know It's not a subsidy, it's an un-needed, out of date price floor dating to the 1940s that will be triggered on Jan 1. There is no current subsidy, but there will be, courtesy of the GOP.And if you paid the slightest bit of attention you'd know that.... rushmc 23 #6 December 29, 2012 Thanks to the GOP? Quote With Congress spending all its time trying to avert the fiscal cliff, a slew of other legislative matters are going unattended. One of them is the agriculture bill which, if not addressed, could lead to a doubling of the price of milk early next year. It works like this: In order to keep dairy farmers in businesses, the government agrees to buy milk and other products if the price gets too low. The current agriculture bill has a formula that means the government steps in if the price of milk were to drop by roughly half from its current national average of about $3.65 a gallon. Problem is, the current bill expired last summer, and Congress had been unable to agree on a new one. Several protections for farmers have already expired, and several more are set to do so over the next few months. One of them is the dairy subsidy, which expires January 1. Arvoitus 1 #13 December 29, 2012 So does this mean I have to stock up on Ben&Jerry's? If I'm not mistaken B&J's is American ice cream made by Americans from American milk. And if the price of American milk is going to double then logically the price of product mostly made from American milk is going to increase. So if normal sized pint is currently 6 eur(~8 usd) then next year its going to be 10 or 12 eur?Your rights end where my feelings begin.
