kallend 2,144 #1 November 7, 2012 IMO Declaring war on women (while claiming that you aren't) doesn't work - women are too smart to be fooled. Pissing off Hispanics doesn't work. Billionaires giving $millions to Karl Rove for attack ads doesn't work. Pandering to your party's extreme wing in order to be nominated, and then having to move back to the center, just shows the electorate how cynical you are. Voters aren't fooled by someone who changes his story 180 degrees according to what he thinks his audience wants to hear. Just shows voters how cynical he is. Claiming that you have a program, but never revealing what it is, doesn't work. (Didn't work for Nixon either.) Voters get pissed off by excessive attack ads.... kallend 2,144 #5 November 7, 2012 If the GOP is to have any future in this country, it must dump the religious zealots, the "tea party" and the bigots, and return to its roots. Southern_Man 0 #6 November 7, 2012 I continue to believe that there is still an place for a party of limited government. However that place currently is not the Republican party. Here are, IMHO, a list of issues the Republicans need to reconsider their stance on: Abortion (restriciton of personal freedom) The war on drugs (restriction of personal freedom) Gay marriage (bigotry) Resources devoted to getting rid of brown people (bigotry) Tax breaks for the rich (will not lead to balanced budgets) Government spending for corporate welfare (Wall Street Banks, Defense contractors--will continue deficits) Military expansionism overseas Talks about less entitlement programs but is not willing to put a credible plan forward towards lowering deficits (which is admittedly difficult because it will involve a lot of pain--Real budget progress is not possible without increased taxes, lower military spending, and lower spedning on Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security). Instead we get talk about Amtrak and PBS--this is pandering. Frankly it is amazing that Republicans continue to hold onto as many elected offices as they do considering the hallowness of their claims to be a party in support of smaller government versus the reality of the policies they push and represent."What if there were no hypothetical questions?" I remember the early years of the George Steinbrenner era; people loudly proclaimed that you couldn't just buy the world series with money. The truth is you can make it a necessary if not sufficient condition. You can bet the next election is not going to be prosecuted with less money. Since Ike, the last good Republican president, the GOP has suffered through Nixon resigning, Reagan tripling the deficit and wrecking the Constitution arming "freedom fighters" around the globe, Bush 1 losing after one term and Bush 2 screwing up America unlike any president innrecent history. The GOP needs to stop picking on union workers, gays, women, minorities and put their bibles away. iMHO

billvon 3,100 #12 November 7, 2012 >Had you actually listened to his 5-point plan, you would not be following the sheeple on >not recognizing it when you heard it. Oh, I think he recognized it. But I agree with Kallend in that it was long on happy sound bites and very short of actual numbers. For example, he announced he would cut spending by 20%. (20% of GDP, which means 3 trillion, down from about 3.6 trillion.) How would he do that? The only hard numbers he had was to cut discretionary non-defense spending by 5%. Our non-defense discretionary spending is around $600 billion, so that's a 30 billion cut, or a .8% cut. So that accounts for 4% of his proposed cut. Where does the other 96% come from? No one knows. Perhaps he would cut taxes and the "magic of the free market" would somehow cut spending for him. Perhaps repealing Obamacare would somehow save half a trillion dollars - but he gave no numbers on this. Romney said he would remove tax loopholes to accomplish this - but people who were actually listening realized that that increases revenue but does not cut spending. After a while, people started thinking "hmm. Maybe he doesn't really have a plan. Maybe he's just making all this up." Even FOX News started asking his campaign about that inconsistency, to which Romney's VP pick replied "it would take me too long to explain." When FOX News starts hammering his campaign on the actual numbers - and the best answer they have is "sorry, it's just too complicated and would take too long" - you know you have a credibility problem. Kennedy 0 #15 November 7, 2012 We learned that poofy-haired New Englanders still can't win the presidency. We learned that results don't matter, pandering to the right people does. We learned that the constitution is lying in shreds or being used as toilet paper by both parties. We learned that any real plan to fix what's broken with not get you elected (not that either candidate had one; just saying any plan involving pain is doomed, unless it's "feel your pain"). We learned the false dichotomy of left vs right, R vs D, etc is still running the entire political process for their benefit rather than for the law or for the country. We learned that the vast majority of US citizens haven't actually learned anything at all. quade 4 #25 November 7, 2012 You can not win the majority, by exclusively pandering to the extreme. To me what is amazing is the Republicans even tried. Given the state of the economy and jobs, if they had simply been more centrist, I believe they could have easily won. Instead they attempted to out "extreme" one another in the primaries and painted themselves into a corner out of fear of losing the extreme far right, so had to continue their strategy up to the bitter end. Ditch the extremists, come back to the center and we'll give you another look.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
