JerryBaumchen 1,473 #6 October 23, 2012 Hi rocket, I heard about this on the radio yesterday. IMO this is simply NUTZ!!! But we also sent some engineers to prison for their design when it was changed by others on-site; and which they did not know it had been changed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyatt_Regency_walkway_collapse A sad day for all scientists. lawrocket 3 #8 October 23, 2012 QuoteBut we also sent some engineers to prison for their design when it was changed by others on-site; and which they did not know it had been changed. The engineers did know the plans had been changed. They had done the revised drawings without the calculations necessary for it. The Hyatt walkway was entirely human-related and another indicator of a daisy chain of acts and omissions that caused disaster. But failing to predict an earthquake? Telling people that a strong earthquake is improbable and going to prison when the improbable happened? It's ridiculous! My wife is hotter than your wife. JerryBaumchen Jerry, I don't think anyone went to prison over the Hyatt collapse. IIRC they just lost their professional licenses. Besides, the licensed structural engineering firm is supposed to provide complete oversight, which clearly they didn't do in that case. There's a comprehensive analysis of the Hyatt case in "To Engineer is Human" by Henry Petroski.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. JerryBaumchen 1,473 #10 October 23, 2012 Hi John, I 'think' that they did go to prison. But I'm not betting my retirement on it. Quote Besides, the licensed structural engineering firm is supposed to provide complete oversight, which clearly they didn't do in that case. That all depends on how the contracts were structured. Sometimes a firm only does the design and that is all. To lawrocket: Quote The engineers did know the plans had been changed. They had done the revised drawings without the calculations necessary for it. My understanding always has been that the field engineers knew and did their calculations; not the design firm engineers. JerryBaumchen PS) I have been wrong in the past & will be wrong in the future; maybe even now.
