John, do not expect anyone outside of academia to understand the byzantine title structure within it. You can explain it until you're blue in the face, but unless they are actively involved, they will think a person is either a professor or student, they can't wrap their heads around anything else. This would hold especially true to those who never had contact with either.

Simply an observation based on dealings with academic icons, professors, lecturers, graduate and undergraduate students vs those who have no interest in such things.

There IS a byzantine structure to it all with color coded robes and hoods and titles... I dare you to find anyone not directely involved who can explain it. Why would they even care to really know?

It's a bit like expecting a civilian to understand that a Captain in the Army is considerably lower in rank than a Captain in the Navy only more so.

There's no shortage of professors who get indignant if a non tenured associate is called "professor." It feels a bit far fetched that a non tenure tract lecturer would be promoted to a position (senior lecturer) purported to have equal stature in but 4 years.

It's true that outsiders tend to squash the title structure down to professor, lecturer, staff, but UofC would have us believe the same, it appears.

Sure! From a recent appearance on FOX News:

"[Democrats] believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You’re going to have to shoot them in the head."

Once all who oppose him are dead, then the remainder will be unified. It's worked for many notable historical figures throughout history.
